perhaps us older falco owners know how how to thrash them properly!

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

When I had my Falco, I always got around 10 miles to the litre whether on a long motorway journey or a Sunday blast or touring A and B roads. I don't think I hung about though I didn't bounce it off the limiter either. I alway filled up at 140 to 150 miles and never saw the fuel light. That's better than 45mpg.
The BMW R1200S is even better but it has a smaller tank. On a recent 1000 mile trip to Scotland and back, I was getting over 50 mpg. Top gear is much higher (5K rpm is 90).
I don't know how you could do 22mpg unless you never get out of 2nd

I wonder???? With the fuel cans you have fitted does it have a chip fitted? That being said, a front sprocket is cheap as chips. They're a right bugger to get off though without air tools.

And fitting a front sprocket is easy. Air tools are not required.
Allen keys and spanners are all that is needed. You don't even need to remove the chain.
