dear TC can this be right?
A raptor owner has just posted (on raptorchapter.org) the most horrific thing I've ever heard.
Two riders (friends of his) were riding together, both overtook some traffic and a car pulled out and killed the second rider.
But the lead rider has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. How can this be legal?

The only way I can see that happening is if there is damming evidence against the lead rider and maybe the poster on the forum has not given the full story.snapdragon wrote:A raptor owner has just posted (on raptorchapter.org) the most horrific thing I've ever heard.

To be convicted of dangerous driving the evidence would have to be particularly strong, and the driver who pulled out should have been reported as well.
But it is very difficult to give an opinion when the full circumstances are not known, and it would be wrong to try and second guess.

I don't think so, after all we are all in control (or should be) of our own actions. I'd never presume because someone I am following overtakes that its safe for me to do the same.snapdragon wrote:so the best bet if anyone goes down is to ride off, come back the other way and pretend you've just arrived

I have heard of the lead rider being prosecuted if one of the followers in a pack gets caught and done for speeding, he too will pick up the points/fine.
The legal system thinks that the lead rider should allow for the followers to catch up and keep his speed down so those behind don't have to speed.

Tolerance will be our undoing.
Only sensible but in my experience very difficult to do. By the time the rest of them are disappearing into the distance you start to speed up to keep up.BikerGran wrote:Because of this, our blurb for club runs includes instructions to ride at your own speed and not to just do what the leader does!
The OP asks " is this legal". The courts decide that. At the moment the rider has only been charged.

We use the 'leapfrog' marshalling system, so no-one gets lost as junctions are marked and a back marker checks that no-onme gets left behind.lazarus wrote:Only sensible but in my experience very difficult to do. The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young.

I can remember this from my old bike club they did this as a matter of course.

For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.
