instant messengers - a thought or several
much to my disgust, i am increasingly more reliant on instant messengers - IM's
but, different friends are on different networks - yahoo, microsoft live messenger etc
and all the different clients make it a pain to try and stay on top - far too many windows open and of course you cannot send a message to an AIM account from MLN etc
so - i started to look around and look at the multi messenger clients
remit was simple - i wanted something that i could access anywhere - be it on my mac, macbook, windoze pc, iphone, ipad or what ever
so - nothing major!
oh - i also wanted something free!
being a mac user, i first looked at adium - http://adium.im
this is a mac specific client and i have to say I am very impressed - like most mac apps, it just works.
Downside is that it does not remember across multiple devices - that does not sound much BUt - having used that facility in trillion....
so - http://www.trillian.im
this comes in two flavours - free, but occassional advert, and paid for at 12 usd per year that is advert free.
this is available on just about all the main formats - windows, mac, iPhone, android and blackberry as well as a web version - ie get on it anywhere.
I prefer this app - i log in to my (free) trillian account and it remembers all my im accounts - it also remembers the conversations - so if i am out on the iPhone, when i get back home I can carry on the same conversation
that is a lot easier :)
nice thing - i can use this for facebook chatting, twitter as well as a couple of other chat with old friends ....
now the downside - these apps eat battery power.... if you use them a lot, watch the battery life !
so - just thought i would share

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

LOL I may use that as my skype tagmangocrazy wrote:... If IM rules your life, you are a crippled soul.

For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.

i have to agree - BUT
sometimes i do need to be able to respond to some events quickly - even when I am off duty, i remain and always will be a nurse - sometimes i nurse people who are not my official patients... i think that makes sense :)
one other thing to consider, not all of us work, or have full health - and our world may just be friends that we can no longer see in the flesh and can only chat with in cyber space....

IM is good for non-work stuff too. I find it particularly useful to keep in touch with the family when I'm away on business (sometimes I skype with voice other times I use MSN or FB messenger)
What I don't need is one that covers a plethora of social networking thingies.
I'm not a Twitter-twat and am firmly Linked-out.

Leave Linked in out of it! its more of a career networking tool than a 'social network' in the same manner as the others. It's about the only one that has any real value.
I agree with Gio about old RS and the use of MSN, however it was as good as the chatroom we had on here.. kept crashing, etc

It's driving me nuts that TV people keep telling us what's being said on Twitter - IF I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT WAS BEING SAID ON TWITTER I WOULD BE ON THERE!D-Rider wrote: I'm not a Twitter-twat and am firmly Linked-out.
Phew, that's better!
The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young.
We should rename it....................TWATTER.BikerGran wrote:It's driving me nuts that TV people keep telling us what's being said on Twitter - IF I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT WAS BEING SAID ON TWITTER I WOULD BE ON THERE!D-Rider wrote: I'm not a Twitter-twat and am firmly Linked-out.
