oil viscosity?

#1 Post by fatboy » Sat Apr 21, 2012 7:13 pm

10/40 or 15/50 ?
Owners handbook says 15/50 but have seen 10/40 advertised as 'suitable'
Am I better off following the book ?

Aprilia put out a service bulletin saying that if a bike suffers from clutch slip, if all the other "fixes" fail, then you should try 10/40.

15/50 is the default - that's what I use.

Close D but it was clutch drag causing finding neutral difficult.

I run 10W/40 because it did cure the finding neutral when cold problem but also I buy my oil in bulk (got 4 bikes in the garage) and I dont have to faff about with an odd can just for the Falco

as it is an oil thread the key thing to also consider is full or semi synth oil

common thought is that earlier, faster falcons, black, red, blue and silver prefer semi synth oil - later two coloured bikes seem to be of with full synth oil

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Don't the yellow ones need any oil :smt005

I thought it was only the red ones and black ones that sometimes had a problem with fully synth - though I could be wrong.

The oils Aprilia recommend are actually semi-synth anyway - though I've run mine on fully synth most of its life. Currently using semi but will probably be changing back at the next service.

what yellow ones? I thought we had burned them all?

and iirc some one with a blue one did try full synth and it was not a good idea....
