The little jobs....

#1 Post by Falcorob » Sat Feb 04, 2012 7:36 pm

Why is it that it ends up taking the best part of three hours?

Decided to brave the cold and do a bit to Bess today. Thought I'd have a crack at the Throttle Cables as it wouldn't take long.

Well that was some time ago.

Took the seat off so that I could pivot the tank on its rear mount. Even got a piece of wood ready to act as a prop. All went well until the tank front mount fouled on the top yoke.

So, bars off, top yoke off, and tank on its prop. Now to get the airbox out.

Answer phone. (Why do people always ring when you're knee deep in bike bits?)

7 screws hold the top on. Got them out to be greeted by a very dirty air filter.
Oh well, good excuse to order the K&N off ebay.

Then 6 screws which hold the bottom half of the airbox in, plus the hoooooge jubilee clip underneath which attaches it to the air intake tubing. Then remove that tubing and detach the throttle cables from the linkage. Attach new cables. Answer phone.

Detach old cables from throttle tube and attach new. Answer phone.

Replace air intake tubing and remount bottom section of airbox. Sit top section on top with partially fitted screws - easier to get off when new filter comes. Let tank down and replace front mounting bolts, but don't tighten. I'll need to get them out again soon.

Put top yoke back on and attach handlebars. Mount all controls to bars - after removing the locating lug from inside the kill switch - and tighten enough to prevent everything swivelling when I touch them.

And all of that just to do the bloody throttle cables. :smt013
I'm right 98% of the time so why worry about the other 3%?

I changed the throttle bodies in less than an hour and fitted a renegade air box...
But i didnt have to remove the yoke.

Next time turn the phone off :smt003

instead of removing the bars and top yolk to lift the tank, either take out the swivel bolt at the rear of the tank to give a bit more wiggle room or better again is to take off the mounting plate for the tank rear pivot, four bolts only.

Yep - that's what I did - far more simple than removing yokes

Ordered a K&N air filter today.

Might try the 4 bolt route next time. Cheers for that. Though tbh I can get the yoke/bars off as a unit in about 5 minutes now.

And the missus rang me, then my daughter, and then my son.

Or, elongate the swivel bolts holes at the back of the tank. Then you just loosen the bolt and the tank moves back enough to miss the yoke !

Aussie ingenuity !

I did that ...... I've run out of room to elongate them further and it still brushes the yoke ..... another few months of ethanol and that will be enough to undo that fix.

Does anyone know where to get those "Danger Extra Long Vehicle" signs with a motorcycle fitment?

I thought you or someone on here was after a danger wide load recently maybe they can help ;)
For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.
That said when it comes to motorbikes, I like to ride side saddle with a nice frock
