Confused by Orange offer........

#1 Post by BikerGran » Mon Dec 12, 2011 11:47 pm

Can anyone help, we have Orange broadband (with a plug-in router) but still use BT phone service and we've had an offer from Orange as below but it's all done by phone and email and we don't want to be hassled into signing up for it till we know the answer to some of the questions!
we'd recommend Broadband & Anytime Calls as the best fit for you.

For just £15.00 plus line rental of £11.50 per month paid to Orange (£26.50 in total) you’ll enjoy:

- Unlimited anytime calls to UK landlines including 0845 and 0870 numbers
- Free caller display and voicemail
- Speeds of up to 20 meg if you live in the Orange broadband network (that covers 85% of the UK) or up to 8 meg if you live outside this area*
- Unlimited usage allowance so you can surf, watch movies plus upload and download to your hearts content
- A new ‘N’ class wireless router worth £50 for anyone who has an old USB router. This gives you the best range and speeds plus wireless access throughout your house
- McAfee™ Family Protection with parental controls
- No connection fee
- Call customer support for free if you have an Orange mobile or an Orange home phone
- You can add international calls to your package for just an extra £4 per month at any point in your contract**
This would definitey be cheaper than paying Orange and BT but....
Questions - is a wireless router better than the type we have or just different and more modern?(we're old and resistant to change)
Would we have to use the McAfee? (don't want it)
If we didn't add the international calls, would we still be able to make them and would we pay through the nose? (I phone my sister in Oz about once every ten years!)
How long would it take them to swop over, ie would we be without phone or internet for any period?

Anything else anyone knows?

McAfee will be a download link, you'd be able to ignore it. (same as BT do)
Swap over should be seamless as the line is..staying.. and all theyre doing is taking over payment of the line rental, etc In theory you should have everything set to a date they forecast, where upon you should have also received the router, etc before then, changeover shouldnt cause downtime

Oh and would we HAVE to change to the wireless router? Cos we haven't a clue! And we have no problems at all with the old one!

Epending on the age and model of your existing router the new one would be set up for the latest wifi standard and should normally also have 4 cable ports if you want to use cable. If you want wifi and don't have it installed on a PC you buy a dongle cost between 5 and 15£. You would need to set a security key and that's about it. It's normally fairly straight forward and the n standard gives fairly good range so garden use etc is feasible allow for up to 100 m I think of uninstructed range reduce by up to 30m for every solid wall

Doessn't sound straighforward at all to me!

It may all have to wait till my daughter's partner is here!

Your 'antique' router could mebbe have contributed to some of your other probs and the upgrade could have benefits.
Flatlander's jargon probably makes it sound more complicated than it is, although it isn't quite 'plug and play'.
You've done more complicated I'm sure and the handbook will have been written for total nincompoops, which you aren't.
In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.

I would check out uswitch.com and see what other offers are out there

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

ok put another way the wireless one has the option of carrying on as you are but with a newer shinier box :smt001

(that can do more stuff if you ever want it to and yes you have a trike this is easy compared to that :smt002 )

I've decided to put this on hold for a bit - been having trouble with my emails and they say they're 'having a few problems' so that doesn't seem a goodtime to commit myself totally to them. I'm sure they'll sort it soon, I think they've been upgrading, but I'll wait till they have!
