Starter solenoid alternative

#1 Post by Falcopops » Thu Aug 25, 2011 3:29 am

So I reckoned my starter relay had died and decided to open it up to see if it was fixable, it’s not and now it’s deffo broken.

Fortunately I had one on the spare Falco that I nicked, but needed to get a replacement eventually.

I had a look through a few possibilities, but getting stuff posted to the arse end of the globe makes most options uneconomical.

In Jaycar (electronics store) I stumbled upon this for around $50 and bought it on impulse.

Solid state relay, 3-32V input and good for 100A. Noticed later that the max trigger current is 28mA and the current at the solenoid is about 1.7A. Quick calc and all I need is a 500 Ohm 0.5W resister, which I just happened to have laying around.

Lashed it up rough on the spare bike and pressed the go button and it works.

I’m going to put it on the daily ride and see how it works, I'll do some pics of the install. No moving parts and no contacts to arc means it should be better than the original.

Just wanted to share.

Cool work!

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Excellent - nothing like some decent MOSFETS to do the job properly.

We've had this discussion before Andy, but I reckon some of the stuff, at least, is ordered through the Devon "Office", but shipped straight from Taiwan.
Could be wrong, but it does make financial sense, why ship it in and out again, when it can go direct.

As it says Howard, their organisation is based in Devon but have a Taiwan-based warehouse (presumably to house their far-east sourced parts).

I expect they keep a limited stock here but dare say that if they don't have stock of some parts in UK, they ship directly from Taiwan.
I would suggest that unless they specifically state otherwise, they will be liable to pay any import duty as you are dealing with a UK based company.

For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.
That said when it comes to motorbikes, I like to ride side saddle with a nice frock
