Does anyone know what engines will fit into it with the least problems?
a 2.0 engine would be the max i can go to due to insurance. Will most ford engines fit, like the st170 2.0 duratec, escort 1.8 gti or even a 1.6 zetec s?

Years ago I was looking into building a kitcar and the preferred engine options were to go with Fors as there was a good range that all used the same engine mounts, so I'd expect there would be a number of options.
This was a while back so likely to be in a similar engine era to the Capri.
Might be worth a gander through the Kitcar mags as they will have a bunch of advertisements for engine recondition/swap options.

First thing to remember, is that this is RWD car with a north south engine.
This means that all the modern FWD engines can be ruled out.
Even if there is any possibility mating to a suitable RWD gearbox, it would cost about 6 arms and 5 legs.
Simplest way would be go for the obvious 2 litre motor from the same era, (think it was still a variation on the Pinto single overhead cam at that time).
Not sure what the differnce was between the 1.6 and 2.0 gearboxes.
If they are the same it may be a straight engine swap.
May need a different front cross member and or engine mounts, but again quite likely to be the same.
If the 2.0 gearbox is different, you may need to check the gearbox cross member as well.
After that, it's all down to odds and sods, really need to find somebody (on the internet) who has done it.
Wiring loom shouldn't be much different, but could have a bigger radiator, heavier duty suspension and uprated disks on the 2 litre.
With a swap to a V6 engine, all these things and more will want changing, so forget that.
Easiest thing is to find a Capri web site, join up and start asking the question, should get all the answers there.

2.0l sohc (pinto) is the easiest swap
Gearboxes on the 5 speed (which he should have i think if its a mk 3) are the same for the 1.6 and 2.0 litre however they like dropping the layshaft when you dump the clutch away from the lights at about 3k rpm , so he needs to make sure the gearbox is good or he will tune the engine only to be let down by the fucking gearbox... been there done that, learnt the lesson..
A later 2.0 sohc sierra sapphire engine and gearbox should fit and bypassing the egr system saves valuable horses from being sapped and is the later as you can go.. which should get you a stronger basic engine. Think the gearboxes were the same as the older ones as far as fitment goes.
Brake upgrades are the first step when doing the engine upgrade. if you cant do the brakes first, dont touch the bloody engine til you can.
As Howard says, Join FOC or Capri Owners club and get the best advice from there.. and discount on spares, better knowledge of sources of spares, etc
If he's tuning it because he's bored already, play with the cams (kent cams were the badboys of old) and play with the carbs on the 1.6 before going to town with other stuff. There's enough fun to be had out of the 1.6's without upgrading. a hotter cam makes a world of difference on it's own..
if he's bored being blown away by his mates, he should switch to picking up chicks. Dead comfy those capri backseats..
