Maybe troubles ahead?

#1 Post by HisNibbs » Mon Jun 20, 2011 7:07 pm

Ho Hum..... Oil light has started coming on when properly warm and at idle. Was idling pretty slowly so I upped the idle and the problem went away...until today. Now the light is occasionally coming on again.

Level is fine but it needs an oil change which I'll be doing shortly. Maybe my recent clutch release bearing failure had delivered a fine metal paste to the oil pump and it now takes a few revs to "get it up". Maybe the motor's fckd but it goes all the better for that is all I can say.

Sounds ominous.

I remember not that long ago someone else had exactly these symptoms. Not sure if it was on here or on AF1 and not sure what the outcome was.
I just mention it as you may be able to dig up something.

A real PITA Keith - but at very worst you can pick up a second hand Falco or Mille engine for not too much money.
Hopefully it won't come to that though.

Maybe me a long time ago

First Nibbs DON'T PANIC

Turned out to be a faulty oil pressure switch.

If you want peace of mind, get her to a dealer and get them to stick a pressure gauge on her - only takes a couple of minutes

Could have been, the thing went faulty on me when it was still in warranty back in 2002 and that was the only forum I frequented then.

Went bad exactly as Nibbs symptoms - first hot tickover, then cold tickover, then hot revving and finally on all the bleedin' time.

Having said that (gripping wood furiously just before me big trip around Austria and Bavaria), that's the only thing to go wrong with my baby in over 50K

You're right Andy it wasn't that long ago, on here.
Somebody quite new to the site and cured by replacing the pressure switch.
Get the pressure tested with a gauge Keith, may be nothing other than a dodgy or partially blocked switch.

Good luck,
HowardQ

Yes one of the options I hadn't posted being the "half empty" kind, was a faulty pressure switch. I've had one of those go before on one of my BM's and that was a relief. However this seems sensetive to the thickness off the oil and revs so maybe indicative of a working, if overly sensetive pressure switch.

I'll be changing the oil and filters soon then caning it like there's no tomorrow.......

I also had exactly the same problem about 3 months ago. Turned out the oil pressure switch was at fault.

Thanks for the information. I'll sleep a little easier and before I swap the engine out I'll try a new switch. :smt001

Stick a piece of black tape on the dash over the oil light.
