Thoughts for next bike .....

No I'm not thinking of getting rid of the Falco but I've struggled for ages to come up with what I'd replace it with when the time comes (or add to the stable) ...... but at last I've half an idea.

I've read quite a few recent reviews of the new V4 Tuono that just rave about it (especially the APRC version).
They say it's a much better road bike than the RSV4 - and a better sports bike than most sportsbikes too. What's more, it's an awful lot cheaper than an RSV4.

The down side is that it's as ugly as an ugly thing and has a silly sit-up-and-beg riding position.

So, while I wait for second-hand prices to descend to the sort of level where I might consider buying (that'll probably be a good few years I guess), I can think about how to put a better fairing on it and a set of clipons.

I love the Triumph Tiger 1050. The attraction of sportsbike handling, road bias rather than off-road and the touring capability. I'd love one in the garage alongside the Falco.

Late F model 9Rs go very cheap, and are probably the last comfortable Jap IL4 big sportsbike, assuming for one minute you could possibly be tempted.
Only as one to keep with the Falco obviously!
As I have said before, they do not have the character of a Falco, but pull very smootly from low revs and only go absolutely mental, if you really want to.
Still can't believe the economy on mine. When I am out on a slower run with Dave, it usually gets over 50 mpg, and the other week it managed 58 !!
It only drops into the lower 40s when you really wind it on, and with 150 bhp on tap you don't need to do this too often.
A very easy bike to ride fast.

I’ve been having similar thoughts Andy, not for getting shut of the Falco, just as an addition, so my Falco could be persevered for generations to come!!!!!

I came up with this;

£4-5k gets a minter that will embarrass most stuff on the track (obviously without me riding it) yet versatile and reliable enough to go…. Well anywhere and back!

Would love to get my hands on one in this colour scheme, never been much of a fan of the ninja green look and it also doesn’t scream ‘ I'm hooligan come and race me’ as much as say a Bussa!

Had a flick through a new bikes guide that came with some magazine or other a few weeks ago and was very dismayed to find that there was not one new bike around at the moment that really pushes my buttons. There were a couple of 'that's what I'd have if I was looking for that sort of bike' but nothing really jumped out at me.

I think the closest i got would be the Tiger or Dorsoduro - but neither of them as an only bike.

If I was to add a bike, I would either have an older BMW tourer - luggage etc or a futura....


Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

The ZX12R is nice Olli, but a late 9R is almost as fast, (like who cares above 175), much lighter, handles better, is probably more comfortable and more economical if you want to commute or tour with it.
Oh and you can get a really nice one much cheaper.
But, it is all down to individual taste and what you want to do with the bike.
Just that I found my 9R to be so much better than I expected.

you dont need a new bike , youv got a 400 four , and if my memory serves me righ youv got new pistons to fit :smt003

Yes the 400/4 project is being prepared for .... I do have a NOS Yoshi piston kit .... I do have RS250 forks, yokes and wheels ...... I do have a Falco upper fairing with headlight. Still a few parts to collect and then get the workshop built .... then get to work.
As you can see it's not going to be standard.

However, at some point I'll be after a new modern bike and for ages I've been at a loss as to what I could consider.
Tuono V4 with clipons and proper fairing is my current choice ..... for a few years hence.

Hi Andy, I must admit that the RSV4 Tuono has perked my interest. I'm (like you) not in the market for a new bike, as the ones I have are perfect for my needs. But were I in that situation, I really don't know what of today's crop of machines I'd go for. Not much really excites, to be honest.

I've never owned an IL4, and I doubt I'm going to start now, to be honest. Ever since I bought a VFR750 and a Ducati 851 (within a year of each other), I've been a sucker for V engines. So realistically it would either be a KTM or an RSV4 Tuono.

Unless I go completely bonkers and regress to a miss-spent youth of two strokes, of course. In which case it would either be a KR1-S or an Aprilia RS250. Quick nurse, the screens...

Nice thought - but a bit old hat, if we're talking new-ish bikes.

If you're into the fairing & panniers thing (which is not an euphemism for pipe and slippers), I'd be possibly thinking of the R1200 ST - never popular here, but, at least on paper, it ticks a lot of the right boxes.
