reduced max revs

#1 Post by b_chiller » Tue Jun 14, 2011 7:33 pm

I have set my rev limits to 11.5 k but the bike can only reach 10.5k

I changed the exhausts (fuel from Nooj)
I changed to a K&M air filter
I replaced the spark plugs to Iridiums summatorother
I changed oil and filter (means my clutch is now a pig until warm!!!)

The performance after these minor mods is very good ie reduced engine braking, less spluttering when wrongish gear but I also have a slight concern at how quickly it reaches 10.5 k revs and the bike seems to struggle to keep up if that makes sense???

I presume one of the above changes has affected something???

cheers

I think you've just hit the stock limiter.

The shift light can be set higher, you just won't reach it!

Iirc peak performance is at 10250

OK - so what have you changed from?
If it's the standard cans etc and air filter, then maybe your fuelling is out (too lean as it may well be breathing better).
Do a plug chop and see what colour they are.

Also, while on that line of thought, has it been fully de restricted? I'm wondering whether you are on the "standard cans with air box bung" fuel map.

Now .... on to the "limiter" .... you can't actually set the limiter - all you can set is the point at which the LED flashes at you to tell you to change gear.
If you look at the User Manual or the Workshop Manual it tells you that a bike (beyond the running in period) has a maximum allowable rev "limit" of 10,500 rpm - it's best to set your light a bit below this (11,500rpm is pure madness - change up a cog or two and ride the torque).
Although you shouldn't go above 10,500 rpm, the bike should still be capable of reving into that zone if pushed - so the problem you mention is something real to investigate.

The bike does have a real limiter but you can't change it at all - I can't remember exactly where that chimes in but it may be about 11,500rpm.

Cheers D-Rider

It was all stock stuff that I replaced so will check the Fuelling.

It has been fully deristricted so no problems there.

I very rarely venture over 7k revs anyway but I gave it a good hiding over the mountain course at TT last week and so it became apparant.
Whan I first got the bike a couple of years ago I sometimes revved over 11k simply because I wasn't used to it after having previously owned an fj 1200 that needed alot of ooomph to get its heavy carcass moving.

Yeah .... I think there are few of us that have not inadvertently hit the actual rev limiter ..... though not a good idea to make a habit of it.

Let us know how the investigations are going.

i would suspect that either a dr rossi chip - griff at aprilia performance carries them, or a Gabro chip may well be just what is needed

also - change the clutch jet - again ask griff
