My daughter's laptop has been attacked/infected/targeted etc by Security Shield - one of those fake 'security alert' links. She's not great with IT issues, neither am I. She's particularly worried that this may affect on-line banking. She's in Oslo, which doesn't make it easy to help her.
Apparently she had to disable some of the AV features to link to the university's netwwork.
I've suggested she asks the Uni IT people for help, and in the meantime suggested she tries this, preferably with someone more knowledgeable on hand to guide her

She'll be back here in two weeks, & says she can manage without internet access (she'll use the Uni computers, or friends', when necessary) until then.

oh - last time i flushed one of these buggers out, i did it twice - the first time in normal mode, second time in safe mode - and physically disconnect from the web!

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

may I suggest to folk that probably the key to these problems is not to panic!
secondly, a usb memory stick is a very good idea to have lying around - back when i relied on windoze machines i used to keep one around with certain utilities on it... but i really did that as i used to have porn surfing friends.... some of them had machines that needed sorting very often!
finally, if any one posts up wanting a hand - which please do do btw, it would be helpful if you say what operating system you have.....
