Swingarm conversion question

Hi,
I've made the mistake of opening the "custom Falco" thread, and I'm thinking about fitting a Tuono swingarm -the black one :smt007 - now.

I've always thought it's complicated, because of the number of components (brearings, clips etc):

...but it looks like it's the same with the wheels (lots of parts on the assembly diagrams), but you just pull the axles out and everything is held in place.


So, it's more or less just undo the nut and pull the pin out from the frame?

I've got Mille linkages to go with the Ohlins, but, where can I look for a swingarm?

I've been looking at ebay for a while, but they haven't got any listed (UK, black Tuono ones), how much should I expect to pay for one, and would it be daft to get this one?

The swap is fairly straight forward but can take a few hours to complete - particularly if you take the opportunity to give everything a thorough clean. As you've seen, the wheel removal is a cinch, just keep note of where the spacers go for re-assembly.
The swing arm removal isn't difficult but, ideally, you need the special tool to remove the castellated nut (item 6) - fortunately, you can pick up the Shimano freewheel removal tool from a bike shop for around £4 which does the job nicely. The hardest part is suspending the bike so you can pull the swing arm off - I hung mine from the rafters in the garage. You could also do with a 3/8" drive knuckle joint (a 1/2" is too big) for your socket set to aid slackening the rear exhaust header pipe - it needs to be loosened to give some wriggle room. There are needle rollers in the linkage bearings so don't loose them.
Many used Mille / Tuono swing arms have dents or scratches on the offside from where the can hits it when the bike goes down. They can be filled or repaired or just hang on till you find an undamaged one.

best solution, though not the cheapest, is the abba stand with teh footrest mounting kit :)

I do have a shimano tool - well - if it comes back from sunny runcorn!

(/eyes the forum scouser)

if you can get hold of him and he has finished with it, get him to post it to you and then you can send it back to me when you have done - i got mine from yank ebay for around a fiver... i had some dollars in paypal i wanted to use!

you will need a torque spanner....


Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Ha! I forgot about the Abba kit, got it somewhere around.

I take it the torque wrench is for the swingarm nut?

Don't worry about getting a Tuono black swinger - pick up what you can and powdercoat it.

Most second hand ones come with a dink on the RHS which needs to be sorted.
Mine was like that and cost me £50. Then it was a case of buying bearings, getting the dink sorted and powder coated.

I honestly prefer the path of least resistance (Tuono) :smt005

Keeping an eye out on ebay, but there's nothing in the colour or price range, apart from the yank one.


How difficult is it to change the bearings?

2002 Mille Ohlins + Mille linkages, with an 04 Tuono swinger,

Will this work ok?

Cheers, one more thing,:

I'm planning to fit a braided line anyway, do I need to order a longer one or will a standard length HEL be enough?

I've got the standard rear brake line - it will reach but if you're getting a new one an extra inch might be worthwhile.
