Spydawn

#1 Post by Thumper » Sun Mar 04, 2007 1:22 am

Advice please anyone.
I stupidly let something install on my PC without realising by opening a video link file. It was some kind of spyware program by the name off spy dawn.
It imidiatly started connecting me to it's download site telling me I was infected with Backdoor.Ginwui.A or something similar.
I disconnected the Modem so as to stop anything else getting in I ran Ad-Aware SE plus and quarantined lots of risky stuff found. I also ran a full Norton scan and it found nothing :smt009
I ran add remove programs and uninstalled Sypdawn but I can get ride of a program that downloaded onto my tool bar it's also in my programs by the name of "System alert popup" I can't get it off with Add remove programs it won't budge and repeatedly displays a pop up "System alert". I have also tried a system restore with no joy it's still there. :smt012
if you open it on the tool bar it takes you to spydawn download page and repeats itself over and over :smt012 Am I in trouble here or is there a way of killing this.

PS a number of free spydawn removal tools on the web but can I trust them?

Trustworthy free online scan and removal here http://www.pandasoftware.com/com/virus_ ... rticulares but note it needs removing from 'system restore' as well.

If you're not happy with free downloaded virus tools, you could try and remove the component bits manually, a la here

Not advised for the faint hearted, as you are playing with the system registry, so plenty of potential for problems :smt010

oh, and quickest way around the system restore stuff - disable system restore, restart PC, remove crap, restart pc, re enable system restore, restart PC
