chain wheel clearence?

#1 Post by roosterNI » Sun Jul 04, 2010 12:14 pm

has anybody came across chain clearance problems? have fitted a set of pirelli diablo rosso corsas, 190 55, and the chain seems to be just kissing the side of the tyre, have had the wheel off, checked spacers, sprocket carrier, everything, made sure wheel was sitting straight, un adjusted chain, re adjusted chain, still very tight, tried to measure the tyre width and it seems to be closer to 196mm or 197mm, rather than 190. could this be the problem?

standard is 180 x 55 but in saying that from the center a 190 should only make it 5mm wider in the chain side

pretty certain i have read of others having similar problems - and there was some variance depending on tyre manufacturer

afraid to say you probably need a new rear tyre

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

thats what i mean, the width is actually about 196 or 197 instead of 190, didnt realise the tyre was supposed to be 180, have run 190 since i have had the bike, about 5 maybe 6 different tyres, never had this problem before.

what were the other tyres?

and what pressure you running at?

i think it was on af1 was some one else reported this problem - and i think - repeat think they were the same tyre manufacturer

Yep that's my understanding too.

As has been said, there have been reports of some problems with 190 section tyres .... and as not all 190 section tyres are the same width (basically there's a tolerance) then some will be worse than others.

Before you completely resign yourself to this being an insurmountable problem, it would be worth checking your rear wheel alignment - if the front of it is pointing slightly to the left, this could be the cause of your problems (and don't use the marks on the swingarm to align the wheel - they are seldom right)

ok, i've used metzeler m1's, metzeler racetec's, dunlop gp racers, cant remember off hand the tyres before that but they defo were 190. i would always go by the marks on the swingarm, how else can you check the alignment?

Well, there's the string method:

The straight edge method:
(usually a straight piece of wood rather than fluorescent tubes!)

Or you could make yourself something like this:

Or there's laser alignment, something like this:

Not as cheap as the string method mind!
