SMIDSY'D by a lincolnshire police officer(traffic)

#1 Post by Dalemac » Thu Jun 24, 2010 4:36 pm

Guys, and girls, I am writing on here today because of the disbelief that i am still alive, unhurt, and dont have a written off bike.

I was riding back from the gym at about 4.20, down one of the main roads in lincoln, the high street. I had just slowed down for a set of traffic lights, but they didnt change, there was no traffic infront or behind me in my lane, but the other direction had quite alot of traffic.

as i neared the next side junction, a maroon saloon appeared, probably 20ish metres infront of me. The lady checked the direction left while still rolling. I was already as far right as possible (there is pavement between the two lanes so i had no-where else to go). i backed off a little but she didnt look right, and pulled out, as if she was turning right from the junction.

She completely failed to look, and therefore see me, i think she was too busy looking at the other side of the road and trying to squeeze herself into a gap in the traffic or something.

as she pulled out i popped myself into the junction gap in the pavement, broke, and swerved back into my lane, still braking. I pulled to a stop in the middle of the lane, shaking like jelly and was in total disbelief as to what had just happened.

once i had gathered my wits, i moved to the bus lane, turned the falco off and got off the bike, to be greeted by several pedestrians who were also in disbelief that we hadnt collided. One of the older men said that he saw her look left, but didnt look right either, and that he was already reaching into his bag to call an ambulance as he saw if unfold.

The car arrived a few minutes later and a girl, probably mid 20's jumped out. She just kept saying that she was sorry and she didnt see me. I pretty much told her that 500 bikers die a year, some of them related to this type of collision.

I spotted that she was wearing a police strap, i asked if she was in the police and she said yes. i said "i hope its not traffic" and she replied "actually, it is". I told her that she should have known better, and this is the reason people die on our roads. She looked very ashamed and embarrased and said she would have to report it to her sgt at work tomorrow.

I am still pondering how she didnt take me out. I would like to think it was my own ability, skill and awareness that saved me, but it was probably just luck. I remember seeing her actully pull out, and i got that feeling when you just know your going to come off. I should have been thrown clean off the bike and into the opposite lane of traffic, to hit a car or be run over or something. I would definately not have walked away from that if she had hit me.

I did everything i could have to prevent it from happening, i was just wishing she would have seen me in time, but as i skimmed past her car i remember it still moving towards me.

Today i was luckiest person on two wheels in the entire world. I should be dead, if not severely hurt. Like i said all the pedestrians were amazed that she hadnt hit me.

I dont know what else to say, other than i want cameras on my bike 24/7 to record this type of thing as it happens. Who would have been blamed if she had me? the hot cop or the young biker.

In all seriousness, I would report her. Not for revenge but perhaps the organisation might adopt a bit of a retraining policy because she's obviously not skilled enough to perform her duties - who will she take out next time?

Glad your OK matey, just reinforces how vulnerable we are

Really lucky escape Dale, it couild have been nasty. Obviously your lucky day!
I had one like that a few years ago in the car, a bloke came off a garage fourcourt a few metres in front of me without stopping and only looked left. The road was very greasy damp, I "T" boned him and his car went spinning off down the road. Luckily nobody was hurt at all, but it is really weird when someone comes out like that without looking and you have very little chance of missing them, you just wait for the hit!
Leaves you twitching for months at every car in a side street.

Phew - well avoided Dale .... though I'm sure such feats are "all in a day's work" for Midnight Rider :smt002

Although you may not have needed them, it's also very satisfying to know that there were witnesses and that they would have supported the way that you recounted things - we so often think that the general public always prejudges that the biker must have been at fault and it's not necessarily the case that people are so blinkered.

Sam and I had a very close call with a marked cop car going thru Dorking a few years back. They came hairing down to a junction from the left and out straight between our bikes without breaking stride. That would have been a 'goodnight vienna' day too, probably for the pair of us, if we'd not managed to brake and accelerate out the way to avoid the car.:smt011

Just cos theyve got 'Police' and 'Traffic' somewhere in the job description doesnt mean theyre above making stupid dumbass mistakes like the rest of us do.

I think i might have had it all wrong when i said she didnt hit me!

Although i dont recall it ever happening at all, i think she got me in the knee. i have 2 reasons for thinking this:

1. when i woke up yesterday my left knee was very sore, it was worse than the muscle soreness in my shoulders and back after the gym work out!! there is some bruising on my knee and towards the side of the kneecap.

2. when i inspected the corresponding pair of jeans i was wearing, the material is tainted red on the left knee, i put them and went and sat on the bike, and when sitting the red marks correspond perfectly to the bruising on my knee.

i just dont remember it happening though. I guess it could have been andrenaline at the time though.

im still finding it very hard to believe i didnt come off.
