Steering dampers

I see there's been questions asked about them on here.

I'm sure there was a thread either on the last RS version, or the one before, where someone (who was in the know) was saying that they aren't needed if you set up your bike properly.

I've deliberately done this thread as it is a serious question and I really didn't want to derail it

Didnt they redesign the Mk 2 version to include a steering Damper?
Similarly dont some Ducatis come with them?

I think standard bikes dont need them, but when the rake of the steering becomes such that 'shopping trolley' wheel wobble is induced easily, then they become a necessity.

Dropping your forks thru the yokes 10mm can/will induce that, but what gets me is that manufacturers dont make the forks in such a way that they can be extended 10mm. I could imagine that having an effect upon the bike shaking it's head so readily.

Ive never needed a steering damper on the road, although ive had times on the MZ at Lydden I think it was, that I couldve done with one.

Ah sorry - I read what you'd written too quickly and thought of the one along these lines that's been running in the Falco section. I really wasn't trying to derail it (mmm ... maybe not the best term considering events in Cumbria )

So I'm right, a properly set up bike does not need a damper and I like the reference to a "victorian solution".

By track bike I mean those that are solely built for track use
