School visit

The prime minister was visiting a school, he was sat talking to the pupils about various things..

'So children, who can tell me what an accident is?'

lots of little hands went up and Wendy was chosen

'Its like if a plane full of people crashed and everyone died, thats an accident cos the pilot didnt mean to crash'

'No no thats a tragedy.. anyone else.. you young man..'

'Errm.. if our schoolbus crashed and all us kids died'

'No no, thats a great loss... go on, young laddie at the back..'

there ensued a short pause while the lad reassessed his thinking..

'Its like if you were driving here and skidded on ice, crashed into a tree and died'

'Ermm, how did you get to that? youre right of course'

'Well, it's no tragedy and it's no great loss'

Brings to mind the recent air crash which killed many of Poland's leaders.

Had that happened here, would we now be witnessing a similar - seemingly genuine - outpouring of national grief?
