would it fit ????

#1 Post by cornish mafia » Mon Apr 12, 2010 8:01 pm

OK i'm wondering now .........in the never ending search for more performance i'm wondering if it's possible to slot an RSVR engine straight into the Falco frame or is it a complete nightmare ??? Also would the newer models engines fit as well .........say anything from 2004 onwards ....
Any one done this already ?

All these questions for all you people in the know !!!! ........ :smt003

Yes it can all be done and has been done.
The old shape ones drop straight in
The motors from the new shape bikes drop in but the electrics are all different (uses CAN multiplex wiring and different ECUs) I guess you can swap the lot but if you search the old Apriliaridersite archive for Garywales posts about how he did it, you'll find that he kept the falco electrics and grafted them on.
You can find him now on the Club aprilia forum with the username of Bushy.

Hope this helps.

Another way to power is a Clarkie 1060 big bore kit and I believe Pete (Aladinsaneuk) found a Scandinavian company that makes a supercharger that will fit ....

Also, I don't think anyone's looked at fitting an RSV4 engine yet.

Maybe start looking now for an engine and try and get it done this coming winter ............weathers too nice to not have abike at the mo !! :smt002
Sounds good to me although maybe the big bore kit is a better way to go ...........i'm assuming that will change the whole power delivery if i had that done ?! And would probably be a bit easier as well ................just want that FULL rsv engine power and not just try to make it better by changing ...ecu / exhaust / airbox / plugs etc etc ........

Thanks for the info D-rider always appreciated and as always an answer to another one of my quetions ............if only life was this easy !!!

If you want to know more about the Clarkie big bore kit, Exdukenut on the AF1 forum had one fitted to his Falco.

One more question then ......any ideas where or who would be able to do such a job ......(.the big bore kit) ........would basically just want the bike back done ......i would have to drop the bike off and then collect later ..........how long should it take .......etc etc ..........Running in period again ? Would it be as reliable or am i opening a new can of worms ??????

AND THE BIG ONE ...........WOULD IT BE WORTH IT ???? .................OH AND HOW MUCH ???? ....................just spent a same fortune getting the thing ready for this summer and already i'm looking into making some more mods ........

My mate said why not just get myself another GSXR 1000 again but like i said to him ...............It'll will never look as good !!! :smt018

A bit of a way from you but I'd recommend Griff at Aprilia Performance - mainly because I know him and have confidence in him.
I'm sure there are others too but I don't know them.

As for cost - give him a ring.

As for feedback on the clarkie big bore, PM Exdukenut on AF1 and ask him.
From what I've heard from him it's a good bit of kit and I'm not aware of reliability issues - but I don't have direct experience.

Sorry to be negative, but what's the point going too far.
The special character of the Falco is the mid range and a pretty decent power rush at the top end that can be improved a bit without too much expense.
Fit an early Mille engine and you probably wouldn't notice the difference from a mildy modded Falco, (cans, airbox , chip, etc..).
My old Aprilia dealer always told me he rode Falcos and early Milles regularly and he could never tell the difference, wioth later Milles the power was a bit higher up and more of it).
Fit an early RSV-R engine, ( as Ady says quite easy) or a later Factory unit, (much more work) and it would would probably cost you a lot more than it would worth and you would have something that rode like a newer Mille with more top end power.
If you want this it would surely be cheaper to sell the Falco and just buy an early RSV-R or Tuono-R.

This is just my personal view, especially after comparing it with the ZX9R I recently aquired.
The 9R has nothing like the easy kick of accelleration at low revs that makes the Falco such fun on real roads at sort of sensible speeds. Even though the late model 9R has 148 bhp and is really tractible and smooth low down, you don't get this instant kick at low revs. The power is there (shedloads of it from 8k ish) at silly speeds, where it will leave the Falco for dead.
Different bikes, different excitement.
I just love the Falco for what it is with a few simple mods and loads of really accessible V Twin power whenever I need it.
As I said it's just my opinion (of the best bike I've ever owned! :smt002 ).

shut up till we have sourced what we need

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Wouldn't disagree Howard - I'd only fit one of the other engines if mine needed replacing.

BUT if I was searching for power I may consider the big bore kit (but personally, I'm not - for me the Falco usually has power a plenty - though I do try to improve the low/mid range response). The way for me has always been to improve handling.

Wouldn't disagree either Andy, which is why I never ruled out the big bore kit if the cost is reasonable. Same goes for a super charger or anything else that gives low down torque, but think that all of these would cost a fair whack and take away the bike I love.
Just my view and we all think differently and do different things, which is what make bikes so good.
In my case with a 2001 bike, any more spent would never be recoverable, a second bike holds it's value.
Like most of us on here I bought the bike for a particular cost (£3k in my case in 2004), and have probably spent more than that figure again, (but this did also include rebuild after the accident a few years ago!). The other thing with me is that at may age I aint't got the energy to be working on the bike as much, would rather just ride it.
