EFI woes

#1 Post by rick » Tue Apr 06, 2010 3:07 pm

So EFI... I have done a search on the forum and it seems as if they're mainly due to a damp sensor in the right air duct.

Well the bike is dry, but I've had this flashing EFI issue since I've had the bike... intiailly I put it down to old fuel, but I've filled up three times since then and its still there.

Its generally quite predictable... it doesnt flash when in neutral OR in gear and revving the bollocks of it (clutch pulled in), but when in gear and clutch out it comes on and flashes continously. I don't notice any loss of power.

I can mimic this by idling the bike on the paddock stand, revving to my hearts content and no EFI light. Then if I put her in gear and accelerate up to 2k or so rpm the EFI warning light comes back on... and if I bring the clutch in it dissappears.

I've tried the diag function... it reads 0 when ignition is on but not running, and 0 when running. I did try and mimic a fault code by removing the HT leads from the rear cylinder, but no error message was displayed :smt017

I'm going to get the hairdyer out to blow some warm air in there *just* in case... but I don't think thats gonna help!

Any ideas anybody??!

Sorry - never had this problem.

If nobody here comes up with a solution, give Griff a ring at Aprilia Performance - I'm sure he'll point you in the right direction - you can tell him I suggested you contact him if you like.

Interesting thread, thanks for that.

After I started this thread I put the Scorpion cans back on (took them off for the first ride earlier today since I didn't have tax and didnt want to potentially be stopped due to the noise and then they'd realise it wasn't taxed!) and went out for another ride, probably 50 miles or so...

...the EFI light never came on :smt003

Since I've only ever ridden with standard cans, and its got a rene kit and a fp chip, do you think those mods don't like it when standard cans are used?

Or is it simply a coincidence?! :smt016

Its a minefield I tell ya!

Been reading those posts... looks like it can be so many things... clutch switch... inclination sensor, diode at rear, sidestand switch, air sensor!

Rick, not sure if your problem is the same as mine was, I had an intermittent flashing EFI with a slight miss fire, it was a loose rear cylinder HT lead at the coil. Might be worth a check of the connections

Well as I said its stopped flashing once I put the race cans back on... :smt005

I did test the diode under the rear left hand side fairing with my multimeter since some guys on the AF1 forum had EFI warning issues with it and replacing it sorted their problem. Also seems as if a damp clutch switch can also cause similar problems :smt003

I don't know whether the combination of the rene air kit and the chip has a fuel map that is richer or something... maybe the restricted exhausts couldn't get rid of the gases quick enough whereas when the race cans were put on thats no longer a problem!
