Which Oil?
Hi all,
OK, dumb question now, but, was in costco today and found some castrol magnatec 10W-40 A3/B3. It was £26 for 2x4ltr containers. Is there a substantial difference in bike specific and car oil?
Just a question out there, jap il4's obvoiusly rev to 14,000-17,000. But, our's only revs to like 10,500 or so. So, is the make-up totally different. Not an oil tech guy...
I use Castrol GP1 (the red stuff from halfords £28.99p).
Any thoughts....

I think the general concensus is that there is a difference beteween Bike specific oils and general car oils. The difference is in the additives used. The significant issue is I think, that bike oils are designed to cope with wet clutches that use the "engine" oil.
I have used good synthetic car oils for many years without problems but that has been primarily for dry clutch bikes. For the Falco I've used both the synthetic and semi synthetic bike specific 15/50 oils.
Because of reports of slipping clutches for some early bikes on fully synthetic the safest bet is a 15/50 semi synthetic bike oil. Also I think you might find it quite hard to get hold of a non bike specific 15/50.

In short...yes there is a difference between bike & car oil.
Does the Castrol oil you saw meet the specification that Aprilia ask for?
My guess is that it doesn't, cars don't have wet clutches of course, so car oil is never designed to meet the needs of a wet clutch, just as most road cars don't rev to 10k rpm let alone the 17-18k rpm a IL4 can rev to
Most high revving cars & bikes are designed to run on fully synth or semi-synth oil for longevity at those revs rather than out and out protection value over normal mineral oil
I would never normally use car oil in a bike except as an emergency (any oil is better than none of course) and maybe my new R1200GS, just because its a tractor engine and has a dry clutch so I can't see any problem in using a car oil in there
Aprilia recommend :-
RECOMMENDED: EXTRA RAID 4, SAE 15W – 50 or TEC 4T
SAE 15W – 50.
As an alternative to recommended oils, top brand oils meeting or exceeding
CCMC G-4, A.P.I. SG specifications can be used.

Which Oil?
Hi all,
OK guys, I kinda guessed that it wasn't compatible with the bike
Just an observation really, very cheap for 8ltrs though...
Will go to aprilia in the morning for some oil SAE 15W-50
Is it worth doing the newer oil filter mod as well? Also, would that mean my adding a full 4.0ltrs as oppose to 3.9ltrs
Cheers...
