How best to listen to computer music in another room ??

#1 Post by Fausto » Thu Jun 11, 2009 5:32 pm

Been listening to Spotify a lot recently and am frustrated that the computer is in the wrong room and I can't hear it at the other end of the house.

What are my options?

Long leads to speakers nearer to me?

Some sort of receiver broadcaster / receiver that plugs into my main hifi?

move the computer (ha ha not a chance)

Do you have a wifi router?
If so then a variety of options - I use a playstation 3 to stream music and video to my lounge

Iphone3 software due next week may repeat may permit wifi music streaming over wifi

Or just get an iPod and speaker set - altec Lansing do a good iPod speaker for about 20 quid I believe

And yes I do recommend iPod over any other mp3 player!

.... as was I ..... but as that one's gone I'll suggest knocking down the walls and going open-plan.

I've also been looking off and on at squeezeboxes and similar.
Haven't yet found anything that does exactly what I want it to do.
What's available is always changing so probably time for me to look again.

Wireless headphones?

I think an Apple Airport Extreme allows you to stream music from ITunes to multiple rooms. I've never needed this, so never looked into it...
It's the V-twin thing. There's just something about it that inline-4s don't have at all, and V-4s don't have enough of.

Well, turning it up is no good. I like to listen at high volume and the speakers aren't up to the volume that would be requited from that distance.

I need to stream (is this the right word) Spotify so an MP3 is no good. Got one anyway.

I think it's an internet radio or whatever term they are using that I need. Been looking into this and it makes my head spin but a squeezebox did look like a possibility.

Surely the simplest way would be to transmit from a wireless router (connected to my pc) to some wireless reciever gadget that I can plug straight into the Aux phono inputs on my Hi Fi Amp ?? Is that what you were describing Pete ?
