Is this a Falco-specific issue?Aladinsaneuk wrote:
and i would not recommend a k and n air filter for the falco either
WHAT OIL DO YOU USE

Good point Mart ..... in fact the whole thread is not really Falco specific - I'll move it to the Aprilia Technical forum.
Now we've some more non-Falconeers here I'd better improve my tidying up of where things get posted.

Pete - what's your issue with the K&N filter? ..... I've got the insurance companies griping that I've got a 2:1 exhaust fitted with a PCIII and now you're moaning about the air filter I'm running!

Returning to the oil question....
Personally I would use whichever brand I could readily get locally. I like to try and use the same brand each time so for me it's Putolene as my local shop sells it.
I doubt it's possible for any of us to be able to scientifically compare brands so unless my bike siezed up a few miles after putting in brand 'X' oil how can I judge it?
It's probably much more important to get the right grade and replace it regularly.

re k and n
for the cost, you can get better performance with your standard air filter and a dremel by making a sort of evo air kit
better performance than a k and n i believe, and a lot cheaper

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...
Haven't got the K&N for performance - I find I can get more performance by turning that thing on my right clip-on a bit further.
The thing about it is that it lasts the lifetime of the bike just needing the occasional clean and oil.
Bought it second hand too - so I'll bet that over the lifetime of the bike it's actually cheaper than all the standard filters I'd get through.

Very happy with my K&N, used it for 13k miles.
Used Castrol semi synth ever since my local Aprilia dealer used Putoline fully synth and the clutch slipped like hell.
Had some Castrol in the garage, as I use it in my old CBR 1000F, so junked the Putoline and clutch was fine. Used the Castrol ever since.
Done another 16K miles since, (26K plus now), still on original clutch and never burns any oil.

It's about the 1Litre Rotax V60 and oil - which is of common interest to our growing band of non-Falco Aprilia owners as well as the Falco crew.mrapriliafalco wrote:Why did you move this thread as its about falco and oil not air filters put it back please
This really is where it should be.
I've left a shadow topic in the Falco forum that directs you here.

BTW here's the oil that Aprilia recommends in their manual ... though early bikes (pre clutch update) will probably choose one of the semi-synths that's been mentioned:

to clarify on the k and n issue
i do not object to them as a servicible part, but as a performance part - they are economically viable for any that are planning on keeping their falco for several years - HOWEVER many riders, and no doubt a few falco owners, buy K and N thinking it will help with performance - I do not think it will in comparison to other options out there
to wit - the full Evo air kit will last as long, but will give increased performance as well - that air filter that comes with the kit is, i suspect, a rebadged k and n unit - but, with the gasket/seal etc it adds to the engine far more than a k and n ever could....
