Indicators not working

#1 Post by wavey » Mon Mar 16, 2009 11:51 am

Hi all
I went for a rideout on Sunday, great weather, great roads, no indicators.

Last time out they worked fine but yesterday I had nothing from the get go.

Could it be the relay or does it just control the rate of flashingness.

Do you have the standard indicators or have you swapped to after-market jobs?

I would start with checking fuses and connections (removed the fairings recently?) and if that seems fine then check the relay and rest of the circuit with a multimeter. The relay is conected in series so if its faulty it could mean you get no indicators working.

relay i think

even if one is left disconnected then the other on that side will still flash - the fact that none flash indicates relay to me...

could be wrong though!

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Thanks for the replies guys

Just ordinary bog standard items

I know it's not a fuse cos the horn still works (they share a fuse)

It's probably a wiring issue but I have not had time to check yet

I had a wiring prob a few weeks ago that caused the headlight to go out if I straightened the bars, turned out the wire had worn where it was cable tied to the stem.

I'd like to be certain as to the function of the relay though.

As Styltiz said, the relay is in series with the indicators so controls both the flash rate and the switching. If you want to prove the relay, just pull the connector off and put a wire link between the terminals (there's only 2) and see if the indicators come on (obviously, they won't flash). Standard indicators use 10W bulbs instead of the normal 21W so you'll need the Aprilia flasher unit - unless someone knows of an atlernative.
The ride is the reason ........ the destination is just the excuse.

Check out switch contacts and dirty (oxidised) connectors.
It was a switch contact problem that stopped my horn working a couple of months back.

Thanks Tweaker, I will rule out the relay first, you've also answered my un-asked question about wattage.

I checked for dirty switch contacts last year when I had a problem with my horn(?) everything was spotless clean then, but I will check again

Cheers

The relays in the diagram are for other things.

you want the flasher unit (No. 5), it's a terminology thing I'd call it a relay too.

The mist is clearing, thanks Falcopops

I just need to find a little time to check it out now.

I tried Tweakers trick last night, but still no indicators.

So if it's not the fuse or the flasher unit it must be the switch or wiring.

Will look again tonight if I get a chance

Indicators working again, Hooray!!

It was a broken wire where it had been cable tied to the head stock at the factory, I did a more thorough job this time and checked all wiring in this area, all ok.
