Ah yes, few of the figures we mentioned confined themselves to a single decade

Bird spanned 3 decades and lived and died as wildly as any of his more modern counterparts. :smt002

80's music was ruined by the awful production. There is so much of it that I recall in my head but when I listen to it again I can't stand the dreadful 'electronic' sound. The ubiquitous DX7s and enormous fake reverb. YUK.

Nobody mentioned Pink Floyd yet... I must admit that I think that 80's stuff was just re-hashed 70's stuff. Sorry Twin-nut, but we heard most of the 80's back in the 70's and are still hearing it's echo in today's Arctic Monkeys/Keiser Chiefs/Killers/et.al music. My daughter has a tag on her Windows Messenger which tells me what music she's listening to. Yesterday it showed Ruby-Don't take your love to town. You listening to Kenny Rogers?????? said I. No she said - the Killers. Why, did he record that? Youngsters eh?

Sorry Andy, can't do the Glenn Miller bit and never be a real out and out Rocker either, bit of a softie I suppose in some ways.
It's always been a complete mixed bag for me, see if you can analyse a thread in this lot -
Started with early Brit R&B and Deep South Blues, like, early Joe Cocker (well any Joe Cocker), Spencer Davies Group, (well early Winwood), Jack Mayall, John Lee Hooker, Howling Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, Early Stones stuff.
Moved on through Drifters, Motown and Otis Redding, Booker T, Junior Walker, then totally into SKA, such as Jimmy Cliff, Skatalites, Desmond Dekker, Pyramids.
Moving on with Santana, Genesis, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Steve Winwood, Bob Marley, Fleetwood Mac, ABC (??), Def Leppard, Chris Rea, U2 (particularly early stuff), Mike and the Mechanics, Paul Carrack, Kaiser Chiefs.
Nora Jones, David Gilmour,(STILL brilliant), Keane, (Best recent band).
Massive Eagles fan., paid an absolute fortune to see them at the MEN in July!
and Pink Floyd (always).

OK - so what about late 80s/early to mid 90s when we had the competing demands of indie/grunge and dance/techno/house music? I must confess to having a foot in both camps here; Pixies, Sugar, Swervedriver, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Blur etc. on one side and people like Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Joey Beltram and Richie Hawtin on the other.

Or am I talking gibberish...?

Amen brother...........inc. Leftfield, Dust Junkys, Primal Scream, Chemical Brothers, The La's (& Cast), The Real People, even The Beloved and not forgetting probably the greatest band of all time, The Stone Roses. John Squire, I salute you, now go and give Ian Brown a kiss and reform (shame they're Man U fans).........anyway, I'm not all metal yah know (just mostly).

Yes, I'd quite forgotten Leftfield, Chemical Bros, Primal Scream and Stone Roses. Top stuff.

I saw Leftfield and the Chems live - what an experience. The bass during Leftfield's set was so deep, so clean and so powerful That I can honestly say I've heard nothing like it before or since. Apparently it did physical damage to a number of venues.

The Chems were just relentless. They took your throat in a deathgrip and didn't relax all set long. Amazing stuff.

Oh yes - almost forgot the Stone Roses. "I am the resurection". What lyrics. I always wanted to chose that for wedding music for some poor unsuspecting customer at the hotel. But the wife wouldn't let me. Sums it up doesn't it!
