There is actually a legal defence, it's known as 'Custom and Practice'

And how do I know this? Cos when Mike was a trucker (owner driver) he won a case against a big company he worked for, on this basis!

:smt045 I know a coalyard that had been around since it serviced steam trains. The rail line had long gone but the coalman carried on with his local deliveries .... until a couple of properties were built next to it at which stage he became an undesirable neighbour and was closed down. :smt009

Each year in the main park in Coventry there is the Godiva festival - put on for the people of Coventry and anyone else that cares to turn up.
Quite a diverse selection of things go on - including bands in the evening.
Local residents that live in some of the posher houses close to the park make a right song and dance (well no - they'd try to ban a song and dance) about this and any other bit of fun in the park.
As a result the event finishes quite early and is restricted to a volume only those with the keenest hearing (and the residents themselves, allegedly) can hear.
These people choose to live next to the city's main public park ..... what do they expect FFS.

Then, in the interests of balance, I can see the other side of this. We moved to our house 24 years ago. At that time and for years after, I was almost unaware that Coventry had an airport. Now it is one of the country's busiest freight airports with a growing passenger capacity. The main flightpath is not far away - and seems to come over us when the wind is blowing differently. What's more, we seem to be on the helicopter flightpath - do those things create a din!! - far louder than the planes (or a squadron of Falcos on open pipes). All of this air traffic seems to have just crept up in recent years.
Then there are the 5 planes that have crashed within about 3 miles of us since we've been here - one less than half a mile away.
Now technically the airport pre-dates us moving here - but for years you wouldn't have known it was there.
I'm not campaigning to close it or anything - but I'm dead against further expansion.

Well, well, well.

An outbreak of common sense!

It'll never catch on. :smt009
It's the V-twin thing. There's just something about it that inline-4s don't have at all, and V-4s don't have enough of.

Sorry Andy I lost the last thread somewhere, "Godiva Festival", I was expecting reports of naked women on horseback riding through the town or perhaps a modern version with naked women on naked bikes parading through town. The modern equivelent would seemto be better as the hair gets blown back. :smt119 :smt119
How did it move onto aircraft noise polution? :smt017

You've clearly not seen the women of Coventry .... you really wouldn't want a festival based on that concept.

An attempt to see the issue from both sides and to demonstrate my own inconsistency.

Signed, even although I don't live there anymore.

Reason being that I went speedway riding day in Kent years ago to a great little track (can't remember the name, but you could see the Thames in the distance). At the entrance there were a couple of people talking to the occupants of the car in front of me at the gate, now I was late and didn't want to miss out on the briefing so gave a short toot on the horn (in the car) which seemed to upset these folks a lot more than it should have. They shouted abouse and tried to stop me, but I was having none of it and clipped one of them who stepped in front of the car (unlucky for them as my car was bigger and heavier than they were).

I parked up and dived into the briefing that has already started and was shortly followed by the aforementioned clippee and all hell broke loose. We all had a great laugh at the shouting match the ensued and oddly enough it wasn't directed at me.

The road accident victim and his mate were part of the residents committee of the new housing estate newly built adjacent to the speedway track and they didn't like the noise associated with it, so my little encounter really sparked things off.

Still the ride was great fun and with earplugs in you can't hear a NIMBY twat who's 100 yards away shouting over his back fence, but he can hear you and see you point out what a wanker you think he is :smt005

Used to be a schoolboy motocross meeting somewhere near her, only once a month and only through the summer, you could hear it from this estate but it wasn't as loud as all the police sirens going up and down the bypass - but people complained so it was stopped.

I expect they'll complain about the kids riding their ex-motocross bikes through the forest now.

Bugger, missed the deadline :( Every so often some rich new twat will move in near Castle Coombe circuit and try to get it shut down because of the noise. Chuck the stupid bastards out onto the street I say, the circuit was there first, if you don't like it, don't fuckin' move there!
