Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Cheers Pete

Maybe we'll get some replies but as they both will easily fit in the Mille BP, I guess there's a chance that nobody would have noticed .... still, we can hope. :smt003

BTW On the Mille BP conversion .... I won a Mille Fairing sidepanel today from German ebay - had previously agreed a delivery price that would have been ok for both right and left panels. Left my son to bid for them both while I was at church. He won the first one but then the PC crashed and the other one went for 1 euro! How frustrating!!
Now I've got the delivery cost from Germany and only 1 panel.

..... this isn't going well ..... :smt009

I can't see the two being a different shape as they're from essentially the same bike, the different part numbers would be due to the different finishes, naked stainless or painted mild steel. Still, happy to be proved wrong here.

One of you hasn't got an oil tank from the new shape RSV/Tuono have you? Not looked closely at Debz' one, so don't know how they differ.

Thinking outta the box here...

#23 Post by tommy » Sun Sep 21, 2008 7:27 pm

Stainless one is RSVR. Thats as far as my knowledge goes.

Here's a question for ya... Anyone thought about getting rid of the tank altogether? Moving it somewhere else prehaps. Seen alot of Harley ones on ebay, in a range of shapes and sizes and it got me thinking. Could you not put a big oil tank in the seat unit for example?
More oil in the tank (Falco has more in there than the a mille right?)
Saves searching ebay for Mille tanks
Probably aids cooling too, not being bolted to the side of an engine.

Any reason why this wouldn't work?

I've looked on Aprilia Yorkshire and the new shape RSVR tanks are an entirely different shape:

I've certainly not got one of these.

I've had a look on the Aprilia Yorkshire site and made a matrix of Mille/Tuono oil tanks against year. Not sure where it gets us but as I've gone to the effort, I'll post it up.

An interesting point is that in it's first year, the Tuono got a unique oil tank and then moved on to use the tank of the "donor" RSV

Although the difference in part numbers between RSV and RSVR could be accounted for by material alone (stainless or mild steel) it may be that there is some physical difference - maybe due to coming from a different supplier who makes them differently or maybe due to ease of manufacturing due to the different working qualities of the different materials. My feeling, until we've seen them side by side, we're not really going to know for certain.

Not sure what the technical problems of supplying the oil from a point high above the engine may or may not be, but I think there are a few other problems.

First of all, I guess routing the various oil hoses to the rear seat area would be a bit of a challenge.
Next, I guess the new tank would be relatively shallow and flat. I wonder whether this may lead to poor supply when the oil sloshes about on hard acceleration and/or braking, what the effect would be of resting at an angle on the sidestand and how you'd get a good oil gauge to confirm the oil level.
.... and for me, the killer, my rear seat cubby-hole is already crammed full - Alarm, PCIII, disk lock, sidestand puck (well, a square of ally) puncture repair, tool kit, 2-piece waterproofs ..... none of which I want to leave behind.

However, I do like your creative thinking .... :smt023

I am fairly certain that mine is this one

https://www.apriliayorkshire.co.uk/cata ... Oil%20tank

but, I know I did not use part number 19 - and with out that, I think the lower half of the tank will be much more snug to the engine

just a thought

Ah - OK, I'll have a look - never noticed there was something I could remove there .... though my impression is that it's the rear mounting that's holding it off.
Certainly from half way up, it's hard up against the engine.

sorry andy

have had a close look at your tank - it is different to mine

i think it is thicker, and slightly longer heading back to the rear wheel

if you remember when we spoke before, you said that your oil capacity was the same with the mille tank - i said i was down by 300 ml or so....

So then, maybe we've cracked it? If I can get my hands on a stainless one, then it might fit with my (now modified) skidmarx bellypan.
This would do the job until I do the Mille bellypan mod (which I think will take a while).
What's more, it will confirm what people need to get the 2into1 mod to work with the skidmarx BP.
Just hope this doesn't start a run on stainless oil tanks until I've got mine and confirmed it works .....
