Twitchy front end

#1 Post by sidestand » Tue Apr 22, 2008 9:20 pm

Took my Falco out tonight for the first time on nice warm(ish) roads for a bit of a blast.
I'm well pleased with the way it lays the power down, plus the brakes (after a bit of twiddling with the span adjuster)
But the front end dives like feck & it's very twitchy powering out of bends
Any special tricks/settings to steady it up ? or is it all trial & error ?

I'll get new rubber next month, after I come back from me Picos & Pyrennes trip with me mates :smt003

I am sure that others will be along shortly to point you to some advice on setting the front suspension etc.

me - i paid a specialist to do it and was worth every penny :)

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

I have a doc. on how to setup motorcycle susp.
If interested send me a PM with your email address and ill send it to you.

Just begin by setting up the sag both rear and front. Also set the damping at the factory default (in the bike manual).

Start to work from this base.

I agree with minime - reset them to factory settings - do you have them?

It's always possible that the previous enjoyer had a play around with them.

If you're still not happy do something else - but don't ask me :smt017

Oh and check your tyre and it's pressure.

I agree start with standard fork settings also check out your head and wheel bearings together with fork oil and seals. I recommend keeping 5w oil as standard.
Next try dropping your forks a couple of rings and if you have a standard shock fit a mille unit and raise the back a little, my spring has been changed for a heavier one as my bike sagged badly under my weight its just fine now a different bike to ride. :smt001

As previously said, get the sag set (I also have a guide if you need it) and start from there using the std settings, if you drop the forks or raise the rear the Falco can get twitchy depending on the type of roads you ride on. (also worth remembering that if you do play with the ride height, you need to re-set the sag as it will have altered)

I like riding on the fast but bumpy B roads that Yorkshire is blessed with but I experienced a full blown tank slapper on my old Falco...which was not nice at all.

The good news is that the RSV Mille steering damper bolts straight on and is a very good investment and that's where some of my money went.
