Repacking exhaust material

Can anyone recommend good packing material? I know there was a thread with a link to some packing material off ebay. There is a lot too choose from though... any recommendations?

Yeah .... bubble wrap is good for packing things and those things that look like Quavers but don't taste like them - they seem good too.

What were you hoping to send me ?

The only thing I've ever packed into exhausts is wire wool - when i was too poor to replace the ones on my Honda 175.

The bloke who does my exhausts for me has had to change to a silicon based packing as mine and my mates RSV would blow the wadding out after a couple of months. He now wraps the baffle with stainless wool then uses this quite thin and dense stuff.
The old packing was quite loose like loft insulation which meant it was nice and quiet till it dissapeared

Looks like you can get high temperature stuff so must be a common problem

i use loft insulation*cough* and repack regulaly, cos £40 a pair of cans every season was pissing me off

The renegades on the Falco have no wadding left and at 70 in 3rd gear I've seen people put their fingers in their ears, can't say they didn't know I wasn't there can they

I'm with you on that Gio. Mind you, I did have an attack of social conscience last year and took one of the Rene's to bits to re-pack it. I decided it looked far to messy a business and all that fibreglass was a health hazard so buttoned it up again. Our neighbours moved a few months ago too

maybe im just a big girl's blouse, but mine are super loud! Loud enough to scare me into changing gear sooner than i would like to. And I always feel worthy of an asbo when I start her up early in the morning.

Plus... mine are carbon Blue Flames, if the "dampening" effect of the packing is lost, wont this be damaging the relatively weaker carbon casing?

Any bike shop that specialises in off road/moto X will keep the stuff in stock.

You tend to get either a bag of cotton wool looking stuff (messy, pain the arse when you can't work out just how much you need), or sheets of fibreglass insulation type stuff which is much easier to use.

Remove the outer sleeve, wrap first with a layer of wire wool (stainless is best if you can get it because it doesn't rust) - this is optional but will make the packing last longer as it will not get scorched by the hot gasses from the exhaust - then wrap the sheets tightly round the core, securing with masking tape.

Remember the key word here is packing - you are trying to get as much in as you can. This will protect your exhaust (and peoples ears) but will also give a much flatter, nicer sound, not so echoey, if you get what I mean.

Ps. Would just like to point out that this is all based on having done 4 stroke single engined moto X bikes - not had to do a road bike yet but I understand the principle is exactly the same.

After registering 115dB at a cadwell track day I decided to open up my silencers and see what state the wadding was in....not good in the rh silencer, about 1/3 of what should have been there!!

I bought some sheet material from http://www.moorespeedracing.com/ it was about £20 for 2 rolls, exactly enough for both silencers.

I think on most it was recommended every 4k miles.

Mind you some of those rivetted cans will fall apart after 5 or 6 times.
