Stray dogs

#1 Post by Myrkk » Wed Dec 05, 2007 12:13 pm

Well I now have no chickens courtesy of some inconsiderate twat letting their dogs roam loose. Heard a commotion, went into the back garden and a jack russell is busy chasing a chicken and a black lab is standing with one in it's mouth. :smt010 :smt013 :smt010 :smt013

If I catch the oweners......... the dogs are currently shut up in a shed in the garden.

Much as I'm sorry for you, yes its the owners fault, I'd not take it out on the dogs, they are only obeying the rule of nature.

Isn't locking them up like that cruelty?

what would you rather I did Gio? Let them out to roam loose? Kill a sheep perhaps? Cause a traffic accident?

I'm awaiting the dog warden picking them up. They have water and food and a bed..........

they're gorgeous dogs... the jack russell is very cuddly and the lab is too........ but they look like they're used to getting the crap beaten out of them 'cause when I was cajolling them to come over they were crawlling belly to the ground and doing that turn over submissive thing that dogs do when they know they're about to get told off.

It's better I got them than the local farmer.......her attitude is shoot first then ask questions later.

Coming from a farming background and having witnessed first hand what stray dogs (and sometimes with their owners but off the leash and out of control) can do to livestock she is well within her rights to carry out such actions.
In fact I've done it myself on more than one occasion :smt018

You did the right thing mate. Someone will be missing them albeit that they don't sound worthy of having dogs. :smt013

If you report it to the Police, If they find the owners then a. you could claim compensation and b. The owners would be banged to rights. c. The dogs wouldnt get put down.

rofpmsl

sorry Kwackz. When I phoned the police their words were well we've looked into this recently and there is nothing we can do. No laws have been broken...RSPCA.....dadadada.... I was so shocked I let them transfer me to the RSPCA who promptly cut me off.

Called back again and got a twat who told me that that was what dogs did, chase small animals! At which point I gave him a mouthful and explained, politely I thought, that the dogs had to be on the lead or in control in a public place and also had to have contact info. on their collars.........neither of these were complied with....... I also......politely.......explained that the dogs had killed livestock and so were in my opinion in breach of whichever law controlled that too. He got somewhat annoyed at that point and said he would take the details and pass it on to his sgt. who would call me back. They also said I should make sure I looked after them properly......make sure they were well fed.........how well fed do they want them? They'd just eaten my organic free range corn fed chooks :smt011

a. I don't want compensation, I want the dogs looked after properly and my chooks to be safe
b. Like the owners give a crap
c. No they'll just be allowed to wander around killing animals until the local farmer shoots them and it ain't the dogs fault.

Looks like the owners have been found though, they phoned while I was down the cop shop handing the dogs in.

You should have told them the Jack Russell was breaking the speed limit. You would have had a SWAT team round straight away. :smt003

We did everything to try and keep our 2 labs in, to the extent the place now looks like fort knox, we had the chicken enclosure inside another enclosure and they still managed to eat their way through .... found them a few times with a chook in their mouth... but they were semi trained gun dogs when we got them and never 'ate' them ... just brought the chooks to me where they promptly died with a heart attack or shock ....

as for the dogs, we've had to get rid of them.... they were unstoppable at running away... we electrified the fence, they jumped over the gates, we put spikes on the gates and they burrowed under.... was nothing we could do unless chain them up forever or keep them shut in... no life for them either ... I was worried sick that they would cause an accident or the local farmer (who is also prone to shooting) would get them.

Had the police bring em back at 3am before.. they were chipped, tagged and everything done right.... its not ALWAYS the owners faults... dogs are dogs at the end of the day and do roam.... especially if they get a scent!

However, they arent my problem now :smt001

No I wouldn't, but the lack of what action you had taken (but not put in your thread) made me think that you might have been a victim of some stupid reaction from the authorities (police, RSPCA, council, etc).

No I'm not, lack of information caused my reply, spesh when some had read the thread and hadn't said anything, until after I'd posted, which makes me think kneejerk reaction

Much as I like dogs, cats, wild animals, domestic animals, I'd not let any of them near my bedroom, lounge, dining room etc. they belong outside.

Many years ago when I worked on a farm we had a spate of sheep killing by dogs. We knew what dogs they were and the local copper went round and had a word with the owners, even telling them that if they were caught sheep worrying, my boss had a right to shoot them. Owners even had a pen set up for them like fort Knox apparently, but the copper came back and told us the owners didn't seem bothered.

Sure enough they were back the next day but we were waiting, the boss with his 12 bore, and took the only way out after 20 sheep had been killed.

The dog he shot was a beautiful Rhodesian Ridgeback, and his companion a Jack Russell. It was very sad, in fact my boss had tears running down his face, but in the end it was the only way to stop them. Life's hard when it's real.

yep I was crying like a baby when I had my 2 put down.... but there was no other way to go... they had never been indoor dogs and it was too late to train them into being so (according to the vet and other advice I took) they were too boisterous to be trusted with children and we've had a spate of unexplained killings here with lambs and kittens.... the dogs got the blame but I still to this day don't think it was them....

however with all that in the equation, rehoming wasn't possible, leaving them as was, wasnt an option incase they caused an accident and it was no life for them being locked up all day :smt009

Country life is a bitch at times lol
