Parcel for soldier hero is sent back because it is two poppies too heavy

"With his son Danny serving on the front line in Afghanistan, Darren Smith was glad to take advantage of the Royal Mail's offer of free postage for parcels to soldiers.

He sent off a package containing books, toothpaste, biscuits and sweets, along with two Remembrance Day poppies to remind Danny how much his family cared.

A week later, however, he received a letter saying it could not be dispatched because it was 0.192 of a gram over the 2kg limit - the equivalent of a feather and less than the weight of the two 1gram poppies.

I think it's disgusting that some jobsworth has decided not to send this out to Afghanistan,' said Mr Smith, 41, from Swinefleet, near Goole, East Yorkshire.

'When I went to post it, it was weighed and accepted - but I don't think it has ever left Goole. I know for a fact that the BFPO (British Forces Post Office) in London would have sent it if it had got there.

'It probably cost them more to write to me than to send it there.'

He added: 'Whilst our postal workers strike for the right to go home early and still get paid, our troops are expected to work 24 hours a day until the job is done; a firefight does not stop because it's clocking-off time.'

After collecting the parcel he re-sent it yesterday, minus the poppies, to his son in the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, attached to 40 Commando Royal Marines in Helmand Province.

A former sergeant in the Coldstream Guards himself, Mr Smith said the package would make a big difference to his son. 'I know what it is like; you can't just go down to the shops for life's little luxuries. Toothpaste and sweets are the sort of things you miss and that's what made me so angry.

'My son is on a mortar line and he sleeps next to his barrel - he hasn't got any down-time.'

A Royal Mail spokesman said: 'All parcels being sent to troops under the free postal service must meet strict weight guidelines which are laid down by BFPO. Parcels must weigh no more than 2kg.

'Unfortunately, due to human error, this parcel was accepted when it was over the allowed weight. As soon as the subpostmaster realised the mistake-they apologised to the customer for any inconvenience caused.'

More than 6,000 UK forces personnel are serving in Afghanistan. Helmand, in the south, is a Taliban stronghold and is one of the world's most dangerous regions.

The Royal Mail announced on Monday that it was extending its free postal service to Iraq and Afghanistan, which had been due to run out on December 7.

Following a new deal with the Ministry of Defence it is now expected to last as long as British troops are serving there. "

Yes a limit has to be drawn, but all that effort for the sake of 2g? ..and HOW accurate do they want to get? :smt012

The post office has closed a lot of its rural/smaller branches.

Now they have TV adverts with expensive actors asking us to use the post office.

There must be some pretty pissed off people out there. :smt018 :smt011
Dont see why. Post Offices are being closed because they havent got enough throughput to make them economic to operate so it makes sense to try and increase volume by advertising.

Mostly it all comes about because the same people who moan that they want a village post office and village shops are the ones who go to the supermarket for their shopping and send e mails instead of letters.

Personally I dont see any more reason for subsidising a post office than any other corner shop.

Don't get me started on RM,

In the 4 1/2 years we've lived here we've

had our bank account frozen as RM decided we didn't live here anymore and sent all our mail back marked "gone away". It took us ages to get the bank to unfreeze the account
have had to get all important documents posted to us recorded delivery so we know we get them
have had our mail opened and put through the letterbox with a note saying the parcel didn't fit so they've posted the contents through and then folded the packaging and posted that through afterwards
have had recorded delivery mail put through our letterbox without a signature being requested
had boxes that wouldn't fit through our post box thrown over the side wall [7foot side wall] in the rain
mail gone missing
been told to document the mail we didn't get so they could look into it :smt017 erm, wtf, how are we supposed to know what we don't get?
etc

and just recently. We had a call asking if there was any reason we'd send the pre-paid envelope back to the agency without any contents. At this point we hadn't received the item he'd sent us [recorded delivery] we'd only had the leaflet explaining we hadn't been in when they'd tried to deliver it. So off I went to the post office collection service, duly handed over my leaflet and watched while the man scurried around trying to find it. When he did fiind it, I flipped the package over and very gently pulled the corner of the flap at which point it opened very easily. The man started looking worried while I explained the reason I knew it had been opened.

The RM send us a book of stamps when we complain, post watch have achieved no better luck than me. Seemingly the managers at the collection office only work until lunchtime so you can't get any help there.

So when someone says think of all the things they get right.......... I find it somewhat difficult.

lol. We used to always give the postie, along with the coalman and the binmen a box of choccies at Yule. Last year we stopped giving the postie choccies 'cause the service they provide is now extracting the urine.

If they want people to sympathise with their strikes they have to provide a half decent service first. :smt013 :smt013

Get an excellent service here. Cant remember the last time something went missing, and the postie is cheerful and helpful. Only problem we have is that 1st class mail takes 2 days to get here but tbh that isnt much of an issue.

Probably depends on where you live. In the south east where posties and staff seem mainly to be immigrants, you get cr*p service. Here we have the trad old fashioned postie who happily ambles round chatting to everyone. And we dont give xmas presents - born in Yorkshire!
