Contemplation on exhaust collecter box

after an earlier mistake has been rectified
(Thanks andy for keeping quiet on it to spare my blushes!)

I currently have the collector box off the falco

Now this is normally hidden by the belly pan, but i decided to clean it - and I have managed to get the pipe sections back to stainless!

Now the box itself - has anyone ever painted it with heat proof enamal or do folks just leave it?
Even if not going to be visible I am thinking of using a rust eater spray, then coating it just as a precaution for the future....

thoughts all or is this overkill?

What collector box?

Think I'm losing my marbles .... maybe it's the jet lag .... that's twice in one day that someone's mentioned a collector box and I've no idea what they're on about.
As far as I know, each cylinder exhausts through an individual pipe and can (unless a mille 2into1 is fitted) - so where is this collector???

The other reference to this came in a reply to a question I asked to an ebay seller. The seller was Motad - the exhaust company. They listed a set of Falco cans but had edited their post to say they'd only fit up to a 2002 model ... so I sent them this question:
Hi - I'm a Falco owner ('03 model registered in '05). You say these cans will only fit up to '02. Could you please let me know what the problem is for later models - the consensus amongst Falco owners is that there were few significant changes from one model year to another and none known to affect the cans (other than the later ones are painted black. Your clarification would be much appreciated.
This is the reply I received:
Hi,
thanks for the enquiry,as far as we know,they were slightly bent different and the sizing where they fit onto the collector is different too.

Well I can't say that I'm much the wiser but we do have a proper exhaust manufacturer suggesting they are different - so maybe they are.
..... but like you, they refer to a collector .... I'm sure I've not got one ... was one fitted to the earlier bikes?

BTW the Motad cans didn't sell and are re listed ..... sorry if I've let the cat out of the bag - normally I get pissed off by people posting up about ebay items for sale but as I've had to mention about my discussion with them and the fact that they didn't sell the first time, I've mentioned them! Sorry if that's caused anyone a problem.

Are you talking about exhausts here Pete? I am guessing you mean the central exhaust pipe where the 2 pipes touch - do they have a crossover or are the gases kept separate?

Anyway - this doesn't help you in the slightest.... sorry :smt006

There were some threads on exhaust plating with some wonder coating earlier in the year. Have you done a search?

a company called camcoat do a ceramic coating on the inside and out side not sure of the cost though,i am considering getting this done when the salt goes down.

As well as them and the company referred to a couple of posts back, there's a company called CAMCOAT that do this stuff.

My understanding was like Andy's, never had the exhausts off but they look like separate pipes very close together and do not have a collector box as I would think of them, however if you look at the diagram below off the Aprilia Yorkshire Site they do look very close, BUT they only list 1 x No.5 option i.e the Central Exhast pipe, so as Fausto says they must be joined here and could even possibly have a link between them.

I would guess they are just simply joined because trying to fit the pipes back on in such a confined space would be very difficult. I would not class this as a collector (and I've had a few Hondas with well rusted examples).
As for spraying them with anti-rust, I am 99% sure they are totally stainless and just go the dark bronze colour. I have tried polishing most of it in the past, took a lot of effort, looked good for a while then went back the same as before, so fitted the belly pan and left them out of site.
The only problem is if you don't like the idea of a belly pan, then the Camcoat solution is a good alternative option I suppose.
Not cheap but it lasts and looks better than any paint option.

Cleaned mine quite effectively using some Stainless Cleaner that Hein Gericke sell - called Optiglanz.

That got most of the crap off and then I polished up with good old Solvol Autosol

They polished up nicely and have stayed nice for longer than I expected.

Well seeing as I changed the xaust system back to twins on what was my Falco, I'd say no there isn't a collector box. the centre section is the link pipe from the front and the rear head pipes and yes they are welded together but are not linked.

As for why anyone would want to paint some crap paint onto them for preservation I don't know as there's not much difference iin price between the SS and ordinary chocolate type. Also if you have a belly pan why bother what they look like they are invisible.
