Ban to hit speed camera detectors

GADGETS that detect mobile speed traps are to be banned within months.

Drivers caught using them will face stiff fines, penalty points and could even have them confiscated.

The crackdown is to stop motorists using the popular devices, which can cost hundreds of pounds, to outwit mobile police cameras.

It will target those that use laser or radar technology to warn drivers. But sat-nav and other devices that show the location of fixed speed cameras or areas where mobile traps are used will still be legal.

The Department for Transport said yesterday: "The starting point would be the standard three points and £60 fine."

Paul Smith, founder of campaign group Safe Speed, said: "There is no evidence that banning them will provide any road safety improvements whatsoever. It's more spiteful than sensible."

Road law expert Nick Cotter said: "I suspect the DfT realise they're losing out on revenue from mobile cameras and want to see some of the money back."

Products likely to be hit include Road Angel and Snooper devices.

Graham Mackie, of Road Angel Group, said: "The laser alert can be disabled in many cases by the owner using the menus to keep them legal.

So, I bought my Snooper legally a year or so ago. It's now Illegal, or could be. So who do I then whinge to about the infringement on my rights? Surely as I bought this in good faith to enable me to have advance warning of accident blackspots, some tw*t should be reinbursing me for outlawing my purchase?

Sod em. I cant deactivate the ability to detect localised mobile radars. It'll stay on and will be used even if they do outlaw 'em.

Mmmmm detectors and jammers are quite different. All detectors do is warn you of the potential of a speed trap (or any of the other things that can set them off). Jammers can stop some types of speed detectors from reading your speed. Some innocent devices also happen to have the same effect (like that gate-opener transmitter).

However the new rules on detectors does seem to highlight confused thinking. The gps based systems that flag up camera sites - and the web sites that tell you where they are (some of these are put up by the police/scamera partnerships) are justified by the authorities as being a good thing in helping us to identify accident blackspots (as Kwackerz points out).
So what is different about these radar detectors?
The only thing I can think of is that they warn you of mobile cameras. There again, if mobile cameras are being used correctly, they too will be at blackspots - so what's the difference?

The sceptic might suggest that these mobile devices are more to do with revenue generation than improving safety at blackspots.
Of course, that couldn't be the case now, could it? ..........

I thought you only could be given points for something that is dangerous ?

Whole country is gonna be hovering around 12 points unless you are a bible bashing, anti speeding, bike pedaling LOON.

Anyway, get rid of the detector and just take your plates off

Get a bicycle no plates and some places its easy to speed (yes cyclists can be done for speeding)

Well, there's the bike pedalling loon - guess I'm the God botherer. Just waiting for the anti-speeding nutter to break cover - or do we have to find someone who embodies all of these 3 attributes to guarantee immunity from points?
