Engine cut out

#1 Post by del_tl1000r » Tue Sep 26, 2023 6:46 am

Hi all. Owned my Falco for approximately 3 months. Was out a few days ago around some twisties. Had been out for around 1 hour. Was accelerating fairly briskly from about 50 up to 80 when all of a sudden the bike lost all power. Revs started dropping. Pulled the clutch in and revs dropped to 0. Engine wasn't running. No warning on dash and dash still had power. While I was still coasting at around 50mph I let the clutch lever back out thinking It might kick it into life but all that did was lock the back wheel up, which was interesting!! I pulled the clutch lever back In and pressed the start button and it started up again no problems. Continued on for another hour without any further issues. Any ideas?

Faulty/dodgy engine cut out switch? Now I've raised my bars, on full RH lock the cutout button can sometimes brush the tankbag. This stops the engine, without the button even latching, so it's not immediately obvious what's caused it to stop.

Possibly. I never actually use the cut out. It's always in the on position. I might have a wee look at that.

Two other favourites are the sidestand switch (if you still have one) and the clutch switch - both will have the same effect

I replaced the side stand switch within the first couple of weeks. The clutch switch is actually cracked a bit so doesn't fit where it should. So basically bypassed as it doesn't come into contact with the lever. I'll get a look at both the cut out and clutch switch though 👍

So a year on from posting this and the bike was still occasionally cutting out. Usually at higher speeds. Long story short, after checking everything electrical I could think of I decided to remove the tank and check the pump hoses. Check out the photos. Pump hoses are fine but I'll replace them anyway but the amount of crap in the pump and the tank was horrendous. Resembles demerara sugar!!

I'm surprised it ran at all! Looks like a sugar can plantation in there... How's it going now you've cleaned all the crap out??

Not rebuilt it yet. Just received the parts in the post yesterday so hopefully get it rebuilt at the weekend and test it out depending on the weather. It'll take a good few months of riding though before I'll know if that's the issue. It certainly couldn't have been helping. The final straw was last week when It cut out on the motorway at 80 mph on the outside lane as I was passing lorries, traffic behind me and It was very dark!!. I guess that's what happens when a bike has sat for a few years with old petrol in the tank. It was an absolute mess. I ordered the fuel pump upgrade kit from AP workshops and ordered a new T bag strainer off ebay. I'll update this once I've got it running.

So just took it for a 10 mile spin around the town and going fine. Gave it some hard acceleration up to some naughty speeds and no issues. Time will tell.
