The falco has landed

#1 Post by Pan » Thu Oct 04, 2018 7:32 pm

My bike got delivered today, in need of a good clean but at least it’s not been tarted up to flog. Plenty of daft questions to follow

That’s odd, the picture is back and I’ve not changed anything.

First and foremost, ditch that bloody sidestand, treat this as urgent, it will fall over and hurt itself.
I would be surprised if it was still carrying the awful standard blue rear shock unit but if it's still there then throw that in the bin, several upgrades available to suit budget and availabilty.
Those are really the only 'must do' mods in terms of a safe ride, I would suggest hooking it up to a trickle charger, don't try to start with a flat battery, you will kill the sprag clutch !
Falco;s hate duff batteries!
Loads of other worthy mods to do as and when, just ask !

PS, RS125 mirrors are also a good thing to fit, longer stems mean you see more of the road and less of your elbows

Cheers gents, the bike does appear to be totally stock including the blue shock )0: that said it was right money and came with aprilia soft paniers / frames. It is however an Italian bike and yes I realize that they all are but my one still speaks the lingo! I've bought a UK headlight so that I can get an mot and a UK registration. After that My plan is :-

1) side stand, cant locate a 2004-2008 fireblade one for a sensible price so may use a blackbird one.

2) shock upgrade

3) Check wire is cut, anyone direct me to a thread for information ?

4) Tuonoize the fairing for proper bars.

5) pipes and air filter, then chip it. Advice on filter choice appreciated

6) Set about making it pretty, paint powder polish and decals, anyone know a good replica decal maker?

7) Hopefully end up with a decent usable bike with plenty of stomp!

Probably loads more but that's the starting point.

Stand, I had a Busa one fitted, bit gash but better than stock, now have a Blackbird one fitted, bit longer than the Fireplace stand but works well with the Ohlins at max ride height.
Some Gixer stands also work.
Shock, this depends on your cash to splash ! One on here really rates a Nitron unit over an Ohlins, you can buy new purpose built shock from 400 quids upward. If you go down the Ohlins route you will need to change the linkages as well and you would be buying second hand.
Don't rush, look at every option with shocks.
Fuel chip, pop the lid on the ECU, see what's there.
The rest of it, see how you like it before you mess with it !
If it works then don't fix it

A new clutch slave cylinder (upgrade) and dropping a tooth on the front sprocket both make massive differences, cheap and grin inducing upgrades

Haha , if I do cut it I promise it will be a sympathetic job done with finesse. Plastic welding and fairings are a sideline of mine, or I should say was a sideline until we produced another child!! But I still have the skills and gear (0;

I am torn between adjustable clipons & traditional bars but I definitely don't want a sports bike style riding position even if it is a slightly relaxed one.

I'm considering shelling out on a set of variobars to be a bit more sympathetic to my neck. They should give me the option to set them up in a number of positions.
The only problems are I want them as per their Falco ones for adjustability but with clamps for Ohlins forks .... and of course, their fearsome price.

Yes - I know that - but why do they need changing?
