Does not sound good

#1 Post by fatboy » Sun Jun 18, 2017 5:17 pm

Horrible noise coming from rear cylinder, sounds like it may be valve train, sort of an RRRRRRRRRRRR.
Hard to tell if it is constant, hear it when throttling off, started today as I was returning from a quick thrash around town.
As the enginge speed decreases so does the speed of the the rattle, no vibration felt through the valve cover
Cam chain tensioner ?

Teeth missing off the drive or how about a bent pin on the chain causing it to chatter?

I'm guessing btw ;)

On the BB it had that and it was caused by the oil pump drive shaft
I hate it when people ask if you have a bathroom, I want to say "No we pee in the garden"

I'd get on to Griff pronto. Perhaps have a sound clip of the noise ready on your phone...?

From the limited info I'd not go against your camchain tensioner diagnosis.
I know Dale had to sort this out on his - might be worth discussing with him to see whether it sounds the same.

Thanks all,
Will try and scrounge the use of a stethoscope to pin point the noise, could have sworn there was a slight decrease with the clutch lever pulled in ( those loud cans are not always a blessing ).
Will get it booked in to the local shop for a look see

An audio clip would be useful.

I replaced my cam chain tensioners 5 years ago (I think), because when going from lower revs to higher revs under acceleration I could hear the chain slapping away. My noie was not constant, and I don't recall being able to hear it with the throttle off.

A quick listen with a stethoscope leads to no conclusion, cant pinpoint the noise to anywhere, everything whirs and rattles...
It's a bit worse when warm and more noticeable on tick over, them loud cans again !

Is performance noticeably affected? And how many miles has the bike done? When were valve clearances last checked?

There are always more questions than answers...

Performance is not affected, no vibration or other nasty goings on.
The bike has just about 28,500 miles on the clock.
I put my hands up and admit I have never had the valve clearances checked, that is the next port of call.
Every time I book the bike in for service work some kind of drama happens, this month its seeing whether I keep my job

Once I've fitted the RSV-R engine I'll have a spare Falco lump - might be worth bearing in mind ...

Found the culprit....
Loose spark plug, front cylinder, upper plug.
This is the one that didn't want to budge when I did my last plug change, I left it thinking that I did not want to risk stripping a thread.
Now nice rattle free running and one very relieved owner !

Glad to hear it was as simple as that, Paul. You may have looosened it unknowingly and then gave up the struggle when the hard work was actually done...
