Is there any way to find a 'missing' PM?

Although I was logged in when I started typing, the forum messenger just wiped my message when I hit send and prompted me to log in again. Wouldn't mind, but it's an important message and I've just spent a whole f*cking hour typing it!

Ah. Sorry to hear that Nooj. I'll have a look (bearing in mind I'm new to this malarkey), but I suspect your message has entered that area of black holes dedicated to such things.

I'm not even sure how many special powers I've been given...

<edit> just had a nose around, and there does not seem to be any way I can check, view, modify etc. any user's private messages. Which is good, as they should actually be private. But probably not the answer you wanted to hear. Sorry...

AFAIK, PMs are exactly that - private, safe even from the scrutiny of admins. Sorry.

However, I shall use The Force to contact an admin Jedi, who is all-knowing in such matters.

If I'm composing something that I really, REALLY don't want to have to type out again, then I normally highlight the entire text and copy it to the clipboard, as the kind of annoyance Nooj encountered has also happened to me in the past.

But only once. When it's happened once you take steps to ensure it doesn't happen again.

No can't be done - sorry.
Anything important that requires thought, editing or a record being kept (pm s go after a while if your message boxes get full) it is best to write in an editor or word etc and save them before copy and paste.
This goes for posting stuff on the forum too

sometimes when a whole load of typed text seems to vanish into that black hole, try Ctrl plus Z at the sametime, sometimes works

What would it cost to enable the board to auto save what you're typing say every half minute?
I know it can be done other sites I belong to have it.

Not looked but we'd probably have to upgrade to a newer version of software and with the current levels of forum activity, it'd be very hard to justify the major effort and upheaval.
Better that if people are posting important stuff that they type it up in an editor from which it can be saved.

Ive upped the session timeout from 3600 seconds to 9000 seconds.
Sorry you lost your message Nooj, there used to be a way to reverse engineer back ups to grab 'stuff' but when timeout has occurred, you unfortunately lose the lot.
Notepad (windows) is best for composing war and peace messages, or type faster.

Agree completely. If it's just normal forum banter, then it's no great loss if it gets lost. But if it's a Technical 'How to' or something you will spend a lot of time composing, then compose offline (i.e. on Notepad or Wordpad if using Windows) and then cut and paste into the forum editor when you've proof-read it and are satisfied with it.

The other advantage of using an offline editor is that you can compose full-screen, rather than the cramped letterbox you get with the forum editor.
