What do you consider walking distance?
So for various reasons the place I worked went shit sandwich. Apparently the gaffer at head office was expecting me to leave and when I did he found me a job.
I've been walking to work which is a 14 minute stroll.
Getting geared up, getting the bike out and riding to work takes about the same time, partly because I can't take all the pedestrian shortcuts.
Do you walk anywhere or is every trip by car or bike?

Living where I do it is well over a mile to anywhere (local pup) , 2 or 3 to a corner shop. So we go for walks with the dog but drive or ride everywhere. Some times my favorite parking is on the edge of town and I am happy to walk in. Lunch time at work I'll usually get out and walk a mile or so round trip to a park.
A little regular exercise is good for you and I know at least a couple of people on this site who would benefit from it too...

Don't put off 'till tomorrow what you can enjoy today
Time for a bicycle? Your 14 minutes would be halved.
I walk to the pub, local shops, & sometimes take a stroll down to the river, or on a local forestry trail. The long-distance all-day hikes & back-packing trips are beyond me now.

15 minutes is roughly a mile.
Walking distance for me is half a hour to forty minutes.
That said I have walked thirty five miles in a day to raise money for the bluebell wood childrens hospice.

I live in walkable distance to the centre of Sheffield, meaning it takes me about 25-30 minutes to walk from home to work. Having said that, the walk in is mainly downhill - the walk back is predominantly uphill. But it still makes for a decent bit of gentle exercise and is cheaper and quicker than motorcycle, car or bus (but not bicycle...)

My phone has a built in pedometer/ health app and I walk an average of around 10 miles per day at work so I don't tend to walk anywhere with the exception of walking my two dogs. Normally they'll get a couple of short walks and one long walk a day. If o had the option and it was less than 15 mins I'd walk to work.
For me it's usually whether I have enough time to walk and what stuff I need to lug with me. I usually go for a 2 mile walk in my lunch half-hour.
If I'm visiting a new place I'll generally walk everywhere - so 10 miles or more in a day is not unheard of.

Yup, I pondered selling it but it isn't costing much, it has lots of luggage and will probably last me twenty years of sometime use. If I'm not using it on a daily basis though I'm going to get a cover of some sort.Dusty wrote:Your situation is bit of a bummer for anyone who's just bought a motorcycle for the commute!

I average 6-7 miles a day./ If its less than 2-3 miles I always walk regardless of the weather.randomsquid wrote:So for various reasons the place I worked went shit sandwich. Apparently the gaffer at head office was expecting me to leave and when I did he found me a job.

I don't walk much now cos I can't. I really miss the long walks on top of the Purbeck hills or across the heathland.
When the kids were young we regularly walked 5 or 6 miles, and my younger daughter did a 20 mile sponsored walk with me when she was only 8.

The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young.
