Buggered my clutch

#1 Post by spiderwheels » Sat Mar 14, 2015 8:17 pm

Managed to do the following jobs over a few evenings in the past couple of weeks:
Fit new front brake light switch
Clean zebra strip in speedo LCD
Strip and clean front calipers
Replace spark plugs
Change oil and filter
Inspect clutch diaphragm for leaks and inspect clutch for wear.

Took it out for the first time today and the clutch is slipping at anything more than a whiff of throttle. I didn't touch the hydraulics and I put all the parts back in that I took out - it's hardly rocket science. But did I miss a trick somewhere along the line?

Check you have some free play at the clutch lever, if not the pushrod is engaging and you will have slipping.
Make sure the operation feels smooth, the pushrod is not snagging.
Sone models have o tooth missing on a plain plate, this goes in first, if you have a friction plate with a coloured tab this goes in last, offset, it sits in a shallow groove.
If your spring bolts are not tight enough, this will cause clutch slip

What oil did you use certain oils can cause some slipping I believe depending on year
For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.
That said when it comes to motorbikes, I like to ride side saddle with a nice frock

Be very careful to get the plates in the basket properly. I think it is quite easy for the top plate to catch on the outside edge of the basket stopping your clutch from working properly.
Don't put off 'till tomorrow what you can enjoy today

That's probably what I've done. In too much of a rush to get it back together..

Fixed it: Somehow I managed to put two friction plates in the offset position.

Annoyingly one of the spring retaining bolts decided to stretch and fracture well before the specified 11Nm but luckily didn't snap. I found a spare and now it's working.
