That sounds excellent news, Richard. Not only an ethanol-resistant mega-bling tank with the likelihood of a bit more capacity, but the possibility of fixing one of the inherent design flaws (those crappy internal pipes).

It just gets better... :smt003

OK an update. I have spoken to a company about the breather and drain pipes. I have been passed onto a company that specialise in intank fuel lines and chemical resistant hoses. They will be giving me a call and seeing what they can supply. I have also been looking into the fittings needed for the pipes too. It looks like I may be able to get one end off the shelf but the fitting at the fuel cap will be made specifically for the tanks. I also need to have made the tube for the lower rear fitting so that can be embedded in the carbon and encapsulated too.

This may sound like adding cost to the price of the tank and to be honest it is. But the price a have given to Andy is set in stone for this initial set of orders. The mould maker has seen a few areas which may either add some complexity or may just be him being over cautious. It is looking like the future retail price will be about £950.00 to £1000 due to the bespoke fittings and the added complexity that I may face. So please if anyone wants one and is thinking about it. I have to genuinely say buy now and save money. If I am doing them almost as a batch or production run I will keep this price.

This is looking like it could be a very nice tank to do and a real challenge too. Lets hope the mould maker does not see any real problems that effect his costs....

Are you sure about this Richard?
Although I'm sure that none of us are eager to spend more than £800 if it's not necessary, from my own point of view, if the price does need adjusting a bit because of things that were unknown (such as breather/drain pipes) then before we pay deposits you can change things to save yourself losing out (with the similar option that we can drop out before that final point of commitment if the price does change).

There again if you are happy to hold the current price but future builds will be more, then I'll post this on the main forum so that anyone who is close to opting in now can understand the advantage in doing so (The main forum can't see these discussions in the sub-forum).

Cheers

I had left a little margin in there for small changes. So removing the Mocal breather allows £20 towards the new breather and drain fittings and pipes.Which to be honest I left off the RS250 tanks as I didn't feel it needed them and it was just the drain anyway so the rubber seal round the cap is not bad for keeping water out. The problem comes when you have to stop doing a run of things and have no templated material or have to pick up a few weeks after doing the last one and the time it has taken increases again when you have to remember where you left off or the bagging you have used for things like debulking have been thrown away and you have more consumables to use up... The bag I use to cure the parts will be used to also debulk them before curing so one bag is used several times and you get a production line going,. So if the fittings only add £20 or so then no problem. The material use is not going to be much different it is the time it takes with probably one full extra day in lay up due to the more complex shape and the extra time and effort to make the base fit and bond it into place. But to be honest I will not be 100% sure until I have made a couple so what the hell if I have 7 or 8 tanks to make in one constant run I will be OK at the price I said. The big one now is the mould cost and if the guy making the mould has any issues. I usually just work to his advised method as he knows the best way to split the moulds and what to do to make the bonded sections work for producing them.

Another painting queston:

Can the lacquered finish on the carbon fibre be (partially) painted at a later date?
