Falco Pete - Sunset 2 Sunrise !

#1 Post by D-Rider » Thu Apr 24, 2014 11:08 pm

I don't know how many of you remember FalcoPete. He's a forum member but hasn't posted on here for a little while (though you might have seen him posting on the Facebook Aprilia and Falco groups).

Pete has been suffering from cancer of the tonsil and base of the tongue - but has come through this and is on the road to recovery.

Pete has been well supported by Macmillan Cancer Support and is planning to give something back through taking part in the Bikers4Macmillan Sunset2Sunrise fund raising event over the night of June 21st-22nd. Sunset2Sunrise is an overnight sponsored ride from Holyhead to Skegness ..... of course Pete also has to ride up to Holyhead and back home from Skegness which will make this quite a haul.
Image

So, why am I telling you all this?
Well I was supposed to be riding with Pete on the Sunset2Sunrise but the entries are limited and I had better not sign up and block someone else unless I'm sure I can ride.
I've not ridden for about 5 weeks since I started suffering from vertigo. I saw my doc again today and he says I can't ride until it settles down (and I certainly wouldn't try a long trip unless I knew I'd be OK). Having had dizzy spells every week so far, I really have no idea how long this might keep me off 2 wheels - I hope I'll be OK before the end of June but who knows? The thing is, I can't wait to find out how I am as I need to sign up if I'm to do it .... so sadly, I'll just have to give it a miss.

So, having let Pete down on this, the least I can do is encourage people to sponsor him.
He has a Just Giving page for that very purpose .... and it also contains his story of how he overcame his cancer and his race against time to put enough weight on to ride again. http://www.justgiving.com/falcopete

As a bit of an introduction, here's an extract of his story:
FalcoPete wrote:In Late September 2012 I was diagnosed with cancer of the tonsil and base of the tongue. From the onset the Macmillan Nurses and Staff helped me and my wife Yvonne, come to terms with facing the dreaded words we all fear, 'you have cancer'.

In early November an operation successfully removed a tricky tumour in my neck that could have left me with minimal facial and neck movement but I was in superb hands with Mr Patel, a talented surgeon from the University of Southampton General Hospital and the whole Oncology staff too it must be said.

From November 2012 until early January 2013 I underwent radical, latest technique, chemotherapy (Cetuximab) and radiotherapy (IMRT). This type of treatment was prescribed as I suffer from poor kidney efficiency at a little over 30% and my body would not have withstood the standard treatment. Thank goodness I'm not a horse!!!

On 16th April 2013, the day after my wife’s birthday we received the best news ever..."you have made a complete and full response". That was an emotional moment for us both, with Yvonne being unbelievably supportive and going the extra mile throughout this ordeal. I certainly struck gold with that lady!

At that point I thought the challenge was over, how wrong was that assumption…

The Challenge:

Although having the all clear I have not had a 'proper' meal in over 17 months, surviving on a specialist supplements called Fresubin and Servimed. My mouth is consistently dry, as I now only generate very small amounts of saliva and need to take water with me wherever I go. Unfortunately, my weight had deteriorated and muscle mass had reduced from a healthy 79kgs down to 54.5. A loss of nearly 4 stone.

I was admitted on 2 January 2014 into hospital for a RIG (Radiologically Inserted Gastronomy) tube operation which was ‘installed’ in my stomach to allow me to receive special liquid supplements using the RIG tube. This helps me slowly gain weight again. I suffer from a lack of absorption of foods through also being a diabetic which was caused by having 90% of my pancreas removed, along with my spleen and gall bladder, back in 2002 in the USA as a result of a gall stone. I’m jokingly now referred to as 'the million dollar man' as it took $1.2 million to 'put me right'. Thank goodness for medical insurance and not being a horse!!!

Thanks for doing that Andi, greatly appreciated and so gutted we won't be able to do this ride together.

If any of you fancy a rideout to Loomies A32/A272 West Meon (GU32 1JX) on Sun 27-Apr I will be fundraising with around 6 of the Bikers 4 Macmillan crowd who will be riding 200 miles to support me - they're brilliant!

My full story will be on show, along with my radiotherapy mask for you to try on, if you wish. There will be 2 Powerpoint presentations running continuously about B4M and the Sunset 2 Sunrise ride and mine about my cancer road to recovery, the challenges to even be able to do this ride and what's entailed on the 800 mile round trip.

So please ride over and see what it's all about and help me raise my target of £5,000 for Macmillan.

We should be easy to spot, we'll be in bright green tutus and wigs - it's not going to be a pretty sight !!! :smt002

with you in spirit

and glad to hear things are going well

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

If Pete is wanting a Falco to fly with, I've just checked and the dates are bang in the middle of my 18 day holiday block.

I could well be up for this.

Any Guidance appreciated.

Iconic I'm blown away and really appreciate the offer - thank you.

Are you not doing anything during your hols? If not that would be great. Not sure if we would be together, as riders are allocated numbers which puts them into groups, so it may be a bit late to do it. If tomorrow's fundraiser goes ahead, weather permitting, I will talk with the Andy from B4M who's the chairman and maybe something could be done to put us in the same riding group. Can't promise anything , but will try and get back to you.

In the meantime, have a look at their website for all the info about signing up (£10) and they have a VT on last year's ride and their cheque presentation too.

My plan (although not set in stone) is to ride up from South Hampshire to Tamworth on the Fri to get my bike serviced and a new map as I have a new MWR induction kit. Stay in a hotel overnight and ride up to Holyhead (S2S start) Sat morning to arrive around lunchtime and register around 13:00. Get some kip (area designated). Then the ride will start at 21:30 Sat night and we ride through until reaching Skegness at 04:15. Job done. Then get some kip and breakfast (designated area £10) and ride home. The round trip for me will be about 800 miles in all. The plan can be changed if we end up doing this together obviously.

In all honesty, my weight gain, which is the big issue, is still not at the level it needs to be to do the 800 miles as I've lost 4 stone and wasn't a lardy to start with. I have all the determination and motivation in the world but the rate at which I gain weight is inconsistent and I'm saying this simply to be honest with you as there is the real possibility that I might not have the fitness (muscle strength) to finish the S2S ride and thought you should know before you commit - just being honest with you.

Will come back to you on Mon if that's ok and will give you time to see the website and reflect on it. I have a TYRE (software) route itinerary that shows all the petrol stops etc. There will be absolutely no bad feelings if you change you mind and will fully understand - thanks again, really appreciated.

Thanks so much fatboy, that will be greatly appreciated and your name will be on a scroll of honour attached to the Falco's double bubble on the ride - so you will be with with me on the day.

Hi Pete!

Read all the bumf and watched the vids etc and still very keen!

Gotta say if there's no overtaking outside the 'pod' I'm in then, i'd be tempted to use my Ducati Tourer as not only is it a bit more comfortable but has a HID kit as well.

Two coincidental points. I lost my Mum, 7 years ago now to cancer and although we didnt access the Macmillan nurses, just knowing the support was there was so valuable.

Second, I used to ride the National Rally years ago and did enjoy it until a guy in front of me didnt stop and rode straight on through a dry-stone wall. He was ok but I didnt even bother finishing the event, apart from signing off and never did one again - but this seems very different and well organised.

Its only 245miles for me to get to the start line - LOL

Hi iconic,

Glad to hear you're still very keen - that makes 2 of us !!!

Just to confirm that no overtaking outside the pod is allowed. Very much frowned upon. After meeting with some of the guys from B4M on Sun noticed that most were IAM advanced riders, so it is very well organised and so it should be, as they've been doing it since 2008. There's lots of riding marshal training and I think each marshal has to do at least 4 training rides before they are allowed to take part.

My ride to Holyhead will be around 320 miles, so will start out on Fri and arrive around 13:00 on Sat, having an overnight stop.

Sorry to hear you lost your Mum to this dreadful disease, condolences. Lost my Mother-in-law and two sisters -in law to it too.

Had a chat with Andy (chairman) on Sun and he said there was no problem in organising it so we can be in the same pod. Once you have signed up you should get a receipt email followed by a confirmation and your riding number. Mine's No. 40 btw. So once you've signed up let me know your number and I'll arrange it.

In the meantime I will send you a message with contact details, email address etc. and then you can respond and we can organise meeting up, I have the S2S route in detail on TYRE software which can be downloaded into TomTom and Garmin sat navs.

Talk soon and look forward to riding together for this charity. :smt002

Thanks D-Rider for putting this together, greatly appreciated. Looks like iconic-944 will be a fellow Falco rider and will be in the same pod as B4M (http://www.bikers4macmillan.org.uk ) have agreed to organise that.

Thanks for all your efforts, appreciated :smt002

Hi Pete - and Andy. We've received amazing support from MacMillan in the last 4 years when I lost both my parents to cancer. They do amazing work. Pete - so glad you are coming through it. Good luck with the ride and I'm checking the diary today to see what else is going on that weekend.

Sponsorship on its way.

Just looked at the dates and it clashed with a family wedding and Blinkey's camping falco meet in Notts.

Good luck on the day (night!)

Hi David,

Just wanted to say thanks for your kind donation, just received it and about to send an email on its way to you. Thanks to generous people like you too, I might just have a chance to make my £5,000 target for Macmillan Cancer Support. Still a long way to go mind. It helps spur me on as I feel that I can't let anyone down who has donated.

If you are serious about riding in the Sunset 2 Sunrise Tour that would be great. I can arrange that we are in the same pod (group of 9 riders), as this is being organised for Frank, who has kindly offered to ride with me too. I know the chairman of Bikers 4 Macmillan and he has kindly offered to arrange it. The form to fill in is here and will cost £10 for a single rider. It would be a real privilege to ride with anyone who has donated.

Thanks again :smt023 :smt023
