Would it be OK if I just came along for the day on Saturday? We're flying out to the States middle of the following week, so I'll have stuff to sort so can't come for the weekend, but if I can arrange I might like to come down and say hi, even if it's just for a few hours (although hopefully for the day).

Although if I can arrange the Friday night and into Saturday I will, but will need to do some sweet-talking first!

Of course it is - we usually have quite a few 'day-trippers'

But it would be splendid if you could manage to stay for at least one night

MartDude wrote:I'm very sorry I haven't posted sooner - I've been thinking long and hard about whether to go ahead with this event.

I've been having increasing problems with my deteriorating back and associated leg problems - I wasn't certain that I'd cope with setting up and catering. However, our local chiropractor has tweaked things so they work a bit better.

The camp site proprietors have also been struggling with health problems - their own and elderly relatives' - and have closed the campsite for this season except for existing bookings - we're still welcome.

The village pub has closed down, and is for sale, much to the dismay of the village residents.

Anyway, although it's now quite late in the day, I've decided to go ahead. It will be at the same venue as in previous years http://www.clunvalleycamping.co.uk/

In lieu of the pub, there'll be a larger, enclosed gazebo; I will provide evening meals in the form of the customary barbecue on Saturday, and casseroles (incl. veggie option) on the Friday night; I will also ensure that there is an adequate supply of liquid refreshment. Breakfasts, of course, will also be provided.

The closure of the pub means that B & B accommodation is limited - Dawn, the campsite proprietor, recommends the Quarry House B & B, about half a mile from the site. I've not spoken to them yet. http://www.quarry-house.com/

I'll post up fuller details over the next two days.

Again, my apologies for my dithering.

For those who can make it, and can cope without the pub - I look forward to seeing you there.
Mart, not trying to hijack your meet or anything, but seeing your post vsv closures, health etc. thought I would post the following info which may be of help.

Clun, about 5 miles before the usual camping place has a Youth Hostel, which also has camping available.
http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/clun

Those which would usually do B&B could book beds/room in the hostel (usually £19/bed/night) those who wanted to camp could make enquiries or maybe block book a room if there was enough people which would mean no need for carrying tents & pitching up/down the tent.
Clun has a couple of pubs as well which are only around 10 mins walk from the hostel.

I have stayed in YHA many times before and the standards are really good. Would mean everyone would have access to warm rooms and showers/kitchen etc.etc.

I have been there this week as we are stayed for easter only about 10 miles away, so went and had a look Sunday.

Not sure that I will be able to come this year as we are going to Portugal on the Thursday, but the above may be of some use to you are an option.
If you were to use the Hostel, then this would also mean a lot less work for you in the fetching/carrying of all the kit for cooking as they will likely have a full kitchen on site.

Leave it up to you, just trying to be helpful.

Rgds,

OG.

I like camping etc but a pub in walking distance is pretty important to my general happiness...

Although I'm not coming I just thought I'd add my voice to the YHA option - I've used them a lot in travels for the Round Britain Rally, and you don't have to be either a member or a youth!

This one also has a BBQ pit you can book.

And as there is both a self catering kitchen AND a dedicated campers kitchen, people could even bring their own food, or just walk into the village to one of the pubs.

Wish I was coming but we have a family 'do' in Wales on the Sunday, and while I would happily camp the weekend then go to Abergavenny on the Sunday my other half wouldn't be keen.

I have to agree with His Nibbs and although I'm very much like a moped ( two pints and I'm full! ) I do enjoy walking to a local pub. However i do so love camping so am torn between the campsite and yha.
I will definitely be attending the frivolities for the weekend whatever is decided and whatever Martdude decides I will go along with after all he's the one organising it.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is "Roll on Marches Meet" :smt003

Just to point out that the YHA Clun DOES have a camping option!

What's happening? It's all gone quiet! Need to know if I need to press my incontinence pants and rinse the sick bucket out ready!
Am going on a trip to Europe's largest red light district this weekend and I will be cutting it short to get back for this meeting.

Sorry everyone. Been working silly hours (except last weekend, but was too busy playing with the new bike), and haven't been able to give this my full attention. Definitely happening, same place as usual. More details this weekend.

Reminder of location etc. All details as before, except, as mentioned at the beginning of this thread, the pub's shut, so all eating and drinking will be on the camp site. Haven't worked out the cost, but it will be a bit more, as I'm providing food & drink for Friday night (beer run on Saturday to replenish stocks).
