Sorry, once again showing my lack of savvy...
Should I renew my Kaspersky license or are the better cheaper options ?

Tbh

I use macs for myself

But we do have pc's in the house

I find that ms security essentials is more than adequate for most folk

I would not pay for any antivirus tbh

I always use a free AV - usually Avast but I'm currently using AVG. If you go to download either of them make sure it's the free one you're downloading though and don't sign up to any extras - they're a bit sneaky about persuading to buy the paid-for version.

Had used the free ones (Security Essentials, AVG, Avast) but every one of them let me down (not on my own PC but other family members)

I've come to the conclusion you get what you pay for.
Still use free stuff on a couple of PCs but those that really matter run Trend.

OS X vulnerabilities rely on the stupidity of it's users...........

I have several Macs, though I use anti virus and never open email attachments unless I know someone is sending them.

No anti virus works if the users are too stupid to take basic precautions, whether the machine is Windows, OSX, Linux or any other flavour of OS.

That's all I use, with the occasional run of spybot.
I keep out of the seedier bits of the web though - except here.

just changed from avg to avast in an effort to solve a problem with firefox - it made no difference to the problem but I did notice that free vast is a bit more intrusive and delays start up when compared to avg.

have never had a virus problem in the last 10 years or so despite SWMBOs inclination to open all sorts of daft attachments on emails from her coven.

I run avg free and the occasional scan with malware bytes. Only ever had 1 problem and I just wiped the computer and reinstalled windows. Job done.

When the PC is working fine make a copy of it using ghost or acronis etc then make regular backups of new data and if it goes bad just reinstall copy data back and update and take new ghost image
Simpler than it may sound
Also stick to the more reputable pron sites
