Starting behaviour

Most of the time the bike starts easily from cold (full choke, clutch-in - a couple of spins and it's going) and hot (no choke, clutch-in).

Part warm is always a bit of a gamble with choke / throttle and invariably results in firing and then stalling one or two times. There's a bit of a crunch when it stall immediately after firing. Is that a normal noise?

its not a choke, it's a fast idle lever. What mods do you have? perhaps a new eeprom would be benefical.

Yes but choke is must easier to type :)

Judging by reading the forums I think I have far fewer starting issues than most people so I'm really just asking about the little crunch noise when it fails. I don't want to shag the sprag..

Suggest a throttle balance etc is the way to go (trim pots settings and so on....)

Been meaning to do that as soon as I replace the perished hoses on my vacuum guages

I think that most people don't have starting problems (at least most of the time)

The crunch you mention is actually the sprag clutch getting a hammering, not good news at all. I destroyed my sprag in just a few weeks of cold starting problems, cost me around £200 to sort out doing the work myself.
You need to get the bike looked at/serviced as soon as you can.
A Falco should fire up in a few seconds if all is well.
Yours is clearly in need of a bit of fettling, please dont hope it will get better on its own, it wont and if you need further convincing there are plenty of nightmare stories on sprag clutch changes, just search around
