Whats in the PB1 garage today - part 2,episode 4,chapter 12

#1 Post by Pierre » Thu May 03, 2007 10:55 pm

Been a busy time in the PB1 garage recently what with trackdays fast approaching and what-not. This of course means the bikes so carefully parked up and ignored over winter are completely bolloxed and so starts the story.

With the good weather fast approaching Michelle decided to strip his vfr. Oh my. Oh dear dear me.

Mr.Honda turned in his grave with the expletives that accompanied the stripdown. I mean, a bike thats never been to bits since it was made in 1987 should come apart like a reliant in a 5mph collision right? Every engine mounting bolt was seized solid. EVERY FKING ONE> How can a smooth shafted rod be jammed solid into a smooth bore with precicely 0 threads involved. Ok so it was steel to alloy and it was furry as fook but how does it lock solid. Suffice to say he used every one of my 86 titanium coated drills to get 5 of them bastard bolts out. The 6th was removed along with its engine mounting using my sds drill and 2ft masonary bit on hammer mode :smt003 Amazing what seems like an obvious idea (hammer it to break the fusion 'twixt alloy and steel) after several cans of booze.

Dont need 6 mountings anyway. Real men use 5.

The idea in the 1st place was to remove the quietening gears and bore out the centre of the cams to save recipricating mass. Well that was the idea until we took the cam covers off, looked in and thought 'sod that, theres about a million spinny things'

And so its frame was put back over it with precicely no work done. Saved the weight of one engine mounting though.

Image

I should say he has bought some RC30 front forks complete with magnesium calipers, quick release spindle etc, and a genuine honda hrc front wheel but hasnt got the yolks back from the machine shop yet. So to push the project on he avoided it and bought the cbr600 you see behind it for just over £700 to have a track ready bike. Like i said earlier, booze. ( you can see the carriers under the engine. I have a fridge just for booze in my garage. Prioritys.)

Ok, bike 2 is Dangerous daves bike. Bought from new its an 02 GSX1400 and now got 52000 miles on. Hard miles. He belives he is the only person to have taken off a perfectly operating multi-million-pound-developed 1400 injection system and replaced it with very very very expensive slide carbs. His air filters were surgical stockings until cylinder 4 sucked its in and digested it. That'll be rattle number 35 then. Various fuels were tried on a mix and match basis including tueneol(sp), meths, pure alcohol etc in the persuit of enough power to keep up with gsxr thou's and were probably responsable for rattle no.47.

It wasnt enough so the bores were skimmed 20thou and the head skimmed 40thou to raise compression. The cams were reground to give longer opening thingys etc and it worked ok until a ride out one tuesday night saw a fzr1000 seize solid and dangerous's engine decided to throw a rod out the front at 140 in sympathy. Happy days.
A new engine was quickly sourced darn sarf , stuffed in the bike and it was ready to do its 1st trackday. It went great, didnt rattle but the frame was scraping on nearly every corner. This obviously meant it was underpowered and before you could say ' dont fuck with it dave' he had the head off and skimmed 60thou. The amounts the same as previous but all off the head this time, which ground some of the valve seat away. Minor problem. Other cams were put in just to make sure if anything could go wrong it would.

Rattle no. 98 appeared after caning it to keep up with previously mentioned gsxr and 1 cylinder was found to be slightly lower on compression than the other errrr 3. Drain oil. copper in oil. take sump off. lumps of metal in sump. unbolt 1 conrod cap and feel crank. More ridges than ridge racer.

Wanted : 1 gsx1400 engine :smt002

Bike 3 is the one you cant see cos after a small headbutting incident at the local the owner has decided to remove it from my garage. So he's taken his dodgy bike from its free secure lockup to teach me a lesson. Wheres the 'ask me if i care' smiley. :smt020

The final picture is my new trailer which is fine thanks for asking. Towed my falco and a rs250 to teeside and didnt explode into a million bits so I'll have to have a look at it to see why.
Image

I could relay the series of unfortunate events that occured to the Bell's bikes at teesside autodrome but I'll save that for another day. I've been to the pub and bed is calling.

Thankyou and goodnight.

And again - GREAT story Pierre.
Reminds me what I used to be like with bikes and rally cars.
Got too old and just tend to spend most of my time ridin em these days.
Strange thing is, I now seem to do a lot more miles each year.
Wouldn't have missed the other side though, readin your story brings it all back. :smt003
The head scimming bit reminds me of a time with an old (Lotus) Twin Cam Ford Engine from my Mk I Escort rally car.
Had re-skimmed the head and fitted high comp. pistons as part of a major engine rebuild to get more power at some silly expense. In a flash of great wisdom I decided to turn the engine very slowly by hand first. Round it went then clunk stop. turned it over the other way and clunk again. Turns out the valves were now hitting the pistons, sooooo glad I didn't fire it up, would have blown the engine and my bank balance apart.
Got round it by stripping it all down again and having bigger valve cut outs machined into each piston.
Aaaah the good old days :smt007

HowardQ - I gave up cars when I tried to stop the big ends knocking on my mini by cutting bean tins and putting them behind the bearings :smt002

Too hungover to work so rambling :) I've been down to 3 bikes for a couple of weeks so I started re-painting my floor. Sure enough I got 3/4 done and someone mustve blabbed cos it filled up again. Still havent got it finished :smt009

An update on the bikes in the piccys above:

The 1400gsx is still running albiet with a heavy ticking sound (you cant hear it above a ton apparently) and starts misfiring when it gets hot
The vfr has been transported back to its home and has its RC30 forks, wheel and magnesium HRC bits fitted but isnt running yet
The CBR steelie has had its wheels painted, a 520 chain conversion, new clipons fitted and kicks my arse every time. Balls.

Gone off my trailer as when its got 2 big bikes on you can see the tyres are bulging so I think its over its weight. Solved it by buying a van that fits one bike in and stick just the one on the trailer.

Below is a picture of how it is now with all bikes dumped after a trackday at Mallory. 4.15am start outside my garage with 2 vans and a car and would you belive it the police turn up :smt003 Split between 'nosey bastards' and 'blimey they do actually do something, nice'
Easy 3 1/2 hour drive down, almost a pleasure with empty roads even though its raining. Stops as we enter the circuit just in time to see steve's zx7r snap a tiedown and fall onto the trailer mudguard. Broke a 6" chunk out of the fairing and snapped a 1way valve on the cooling system dumping its contents in the carpark. We all laugh.

Track is wet and i've got £40 ebay slicks on withought warmers but Craig goes out on his cold slicks so I follow. 2 sighting laps later its not too bad but just take it steady, 'tis a long day afterall.

2nd session is almost dry as its blowing a gale so its 1 lap to warm the tyres up and build up speed. Craigs had his warmers on so just goes flatout from the start which is his undoing :smt001 He's flying past loads as they take it easy warming up and someone turns into a corner not expecting a ballsout aprilia 250 2stroke to be on a motogp qualifying run. 250 has to cut corner over the rumblestrips in avoidance and finds his rear wheel overtaking his front. Unfortunately I miss this as i'm being sensible and turn the corner only to see the death throws of a spinning bike and a body in the track. Recognise who it is imediately and have to decide to avoid him or give him a kick on the way past but have enough to avoid with all the panic braking from others.
Red flags out while he gets a lift down to the medical center to check if he's anymore braindamaged than normal. Bikes fairing is mashed, clipons snapped , clock bracket is 2 miles out, gearlevers doing an impression of a banana but it still runs. His helmet is worn through on the crown to the fibreglass matting that you can push with you finger so he's been totally upside down skidding down the track AND NO PHOTOS dammit. With a choice of seeing if he's alright or checking the bike, we head for the bike :smt003

Before :

After:

The rest of the day goes without incident. Apart from Steve reversing over my helmet. And Micheals cbr fuel pump breaking and stranding him on track. Oh and Spocks FZ jamming on full throttle down the straight. My falco ran great all day overtaking much faster bikes which is always fun. I've just fitted new carbon sleeves on my wolf cans so it looked and sounded loads better but used another set of tyres. I need a tyre sponsor , its costing @£50 a day 1!!! :smt002
Image
Anyway, we do our last session which only leaves Steve in the novices with a session to go but he calls it quits. . Its his first trackday , he's in borrowed leathers that dont fit, he didnt go to bed till 2 and drove down at 4 and we keep forgetting he's 60 :smt005 . If you havent done a trackday yet then you should at least try it. As Steve says ' I wish i'd done it 40 years ago' but I think they were steampowered then so less fun probably.
Then we notice his trailer has a flat cos the bike pushed the mudguard into the tyre so its off with the wheel and over to sweettalk the tyre fitter and at that point it started absolutely belting down . Couldnt leave the circuit as at Mallory you actually are inside it and have to drive round it to leave but 1 bike was out going very very slowly. Bet he would have come in if he'd known there were 80+ people queuing to get out :smt003
Left at 5 , hit the traffic and got back at 9.45 quite tired. Dumped everything in my garage and went to bed.
Image

Nothings moved since friday as we're getting too old and ache all over. Maybe this weekend as *smug mode* WE HAVE TO PREPARE FOR CARAGENA :smt016 :smt008 :smt003 in November
I have an ohlins to fit, new fully sintered pads to go in, oil and filter to change and am gonna paint my fairings to almost match my tank. I should be getting my spare crashing cans this weekend aswell so I should have enough spares. I could do with another brake lever and gear lever if anyones got some?

Hmmm that turned into a trackday report instead of a garage update.Anyway, I've had 2 coffees and some choc chip cookies so I feel a lot better. I may actually go to work, tarraaaa

Wahey, comedians :smt016

It would make you laugh if I told you how much i got it for. The falco-04 swingarm has been done, wonder if the 01 rsv-04 swingarm has? Cos thats the plan
Got a spare shock, linkage, wheels, exhausts.
Need forks and tripleclamps to make a rolling chassis

Was gonna make a homebrew thing over winter but this has fallen in my lap so I guess its aprilia based then. Might put the fuel in the headlight, exhausts over the engine and the wiring in the bellypan, just for a change you know.

hmmmm not much to report really. Roadbike hasnt been on the road for over a year. Trackbike hasnt been on the track since November.

This can be put down to 1 thing only. Women. How the FUCK do they manage to take over in such a short time. I've spent less time with my bikes in the last year but spent 3 times as much, how the fuck does that work cos I lashed all my money on my bikes.

So i was nice and warm over the winter but knew summer was coming so i kinda engineered a fallout to allow me to enjoy myself again. BUT then I go and get another tart straight away. :smt011

Anyway, got the factory engine in, but the rear downpipe hit the falco swingarm. No problem, cut and welded it about 1degree different angle and it missed.
Tried to line the collector pipes up and the right side ended with about 10% of it under the swingarm ffs.
Stuck the 04 swingarm in, recut and rewelded the downpipe and all is good
Go to fit the linkages and the twating bottom shock mount touches the whoring dogbone. How the fuckery does that happen, 02 shock longer than others? Fuckit, it'll have to touch, what can possibly go wrong

All that remains for the trackbike are :
Finish exhausts (need falco wolf cans converted to bigger diameter collector pipes unless i come across some cheap rsv cans)
Cooling to finish (rad has small hole in and is bent like a banana at one side, should be ok though)
Wiring to diagnose (need to find which is sidestand wire on loom and short out, need to find oil light wire and errrr do something with it, apparently bike wont start without it working? and i have no dashboard)

Roadbike needs :
Bellypan painting
Some rear brakelights engineering. Test station last time said ' dont bring that back here ' :smt009 So i need a new sympathetic mot place to take the peice of shit to :smt003

Notice claw hammer instead of club hammer for those delicate jobs, and also the fucking piano under the sheet i've had in storage for my sister for 8 fucking years that she now doesnt fucking want, for fucks sake
Image[/img]

My tyre supply that I've built up over winter thanks to some uber-ebay-sniping and mates who race. Pay £200 for a pair of racetecs , do 20 laps and sell them for £50. muhahah
Also notice pile of aluminium filings on the floor, wonder what they came off. :smt120
Image

Not much to see here apart from a trailer ( for sale, £235 inc lightboard ) , another spare engine, a tank that wont fit a falco, a frame that wont fit fuckall, and james bonds car that i'm looking after for him :smt003
Image

I'm actually going into the garage now to hammer the shit out of the rear suspension before i go to the pub for a friday afternoon tipple.

ps, i've also bought another set of ebay leathers, although this time i was sober so they are plain black with only the small problem of they are far too fucking big. ahh balls.
