Tyne Tunnel

This will mean nothing to those south of Durham but it's a way of getting information out there.

"For those of you who don't know, the speed cameras are now switched on in the tunnel.

More than 300 vehicles caught on the first day
40mph south bound. 30mph north bound " :smt013

I used to be a frequent user when I lived in Teesside but that was before they built the second tunnel for southbound traffic. The last time I went through on a bike I dropped my 20p toll. Thankfully, the toll operator realised that I would hold up the traffic if I had to look for the coin or fumble for another so she waved me through. When I got home, I found the 20p coin; it had slipped under my Baglux tank cover at the fuel filler aperture. OK, no smart comments about mean Scots please!

Tuppence! Heard it was a ha'penny and a pair of Yorkshireman

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

I heard about the cameras from a few friends (I use it regularly when going 'home' to see my parents in Wallsend). On the plus side, its now free for bikes to use.

I wonder if people are getting points and fined or just a warning.

I was told years ago that because the tunnel is effectively a toll road, some parts of the road traffic act don't apply as it's not a public road.

Having said that, when I was in it last week I was doing the obligatory 30 and the throbber behind overtook me (double white lines throughout) and disappeared into the distance. Nice to think justice will catch up with him.

Im fairly sure that if any type of road serves as public access then all the usual Highway stuff applies.
