Pass me that oily sprag please

#1 Post by KitchenSync » Sun Mar 03, 2013 9:33 am

Well the sprag is out and looks typically done for as expected. Evidence of previous work (as confirmed by the awesome Bigun)

The inner surface of ring is bumpy, the lobes of the sprag are perfect, the spring (as you see) is "tense".

I'm at the point of making a decision: shorten the spring and hope it'll go for a few months until I've got the money to replace (the engine probably as it's carrying a few battle-scars from it's 41,000 mile life) - or should I borrow some cash, renew it anyway, and carry on putting oil in for a few more years.

This is my primary vehicle now the DVLA kindly offered to remove my car (yup - an own goal admittedly)

Any advice - I probably know the answer.

Looks a lot like mine did when I pulled it out last year. I got the Ducati part (identical but cheaper) via Ebay but I understand one of the KTM range is also the same?
I'm not 100% sure which model though...
I'd personally go with getting a new sprag (£50 or so), especially as you've already done the hard part in getting the oldun out!
Two is the magic number... ;)

Replace it - time is also money and you would have already done the hard part....

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Griff sells origional sprag clutches 85 quid delivered. I personally did'nt want to mess about fitting a new sprag in backwards.
Obviously this is down to choice.
And i definatly would not mess about with an old sprag clutch has you may cause more damage in the long run. :smt009

Well - I did it anyway!

Heh - I cut 20mm out of the spring - cleaned it all up - and it worked!

With only a few hunnered quid to keep a roof over my head replacement was something I was keen to avoid.

If I can get ahead I'll change the engine anyway - a shattered output shaft seal housing from when a sprocket came loose many years ago makes it leak oil constantly.

All in all I'm happy for the time being.

Hi and welcome :smt006

There are several repairs to the sprag for those on different budgets - the cheapest of all involves shortening the spring that goes round it. Basically no cost but probably a shorter life time until one of the other solutions needs to be done.

We'll point you to the info if you end up with such a problem (most of us haven't) .... and someone will probably suggest you search with our handy forum search function. :smt003
