bridged the starter solenoid, exactly the same as before. Took me a couple of goes, because the sparks always make me flinch. Natural reactions and all. I couldn't see any obvious fraying anywhere on the wiring loom around the headstock, but i will raise the tamk tomorrow and take a better look.

I gave the sidestand switch a good spray of gt85 and it turned over twice before the clocks reset. Can;t get it off though as I seem to have misplaced my 8mm socket. I'll try again in the morning. Hopefully its just full of crap ad needs a good clean.

Complete red herring for the symptoms you described

Cheers Andy. I think I will run it down to Halfords (not literally, think my foot would fall off) and see if they will test it for me.

Amazon seller i bought it off doesn't seem to be responding. Joy.

It is incredible how good some original equipment is.
Mine lasted almost 8 years, can't remember what it was. :smt017
The model I am using now is a Dynavolt MG14-BS Gel Battery 13.5Ah.

I agree, the battery I pulled out of the Falco last year was the original - 10 years old.

If only they didn't make all the bolts and fixings out of cheese.

I don't honestly think that the fasteners are any worse or any better than on any other bike. What does happen over time is that the threads of fasteners corrode and much more force is needed to undo them. This leads to rounding off of bolt heads etc. The best thing you can invest in is a tube of Wurth CU 800 anti-seize compound and apply a little dab of it on every bolt (especially bodywork fasteners etc.) you undo. It makes life so much easier in the longer term.

Thanks for the idea Mangocrazy

I tried to jump start the bike from a mates car. It turned over, which is good, but still wouldn't start. Then there was a mechanical crunch noise. have I just killed the sprag clutch?

So the battery is obviously deaded.

If it did work out to be the sidestand switch, would it still a low the starter to spin, but not actually give any power to the coils?

How can I test to see if the sidestand switch is buggered?

I'm scared....

It is normal to be able to start the bike whatever the state of the sidestand switch. It only kills things when the bike is in gear.

Another red herring .......

Argh.

Still no start.

New spark plugs, one new spark plug cap, new motobatt battery.

It turns, but will not start. There is an odd pinging noise every turn. I initially thought it was the cam chain because it hasn't been used for a while, but now i'm not so sure. seems to be coming from the front of the engine.

I might need some help on this after all.

Any other ideas/suggestions?

Thanks,

Dale

EDIT

OK, it started :) It was the cam chain. Me and my paranoia.

Its running a bit rough though. Going to check the balance and idle speeds.

Boy am I releaved!

Well, this battery failed on me today. It was turning the bike over like normal, but wouldn't start. Manage to get the bike Home after being rescued by a neighbour and his battery pack...

Looks like I'm in the market for a new battery then! Perhaps I'll go yuasa this time...

Have just shoved one of these on the Futura.

The sales patter is good.. Reviews from all manner of forums are good. For the price, thought I'd give it a go. :smt001

I've had a Yuasa YTZ14s on mine for a few years now (so same spec different manufacturer to Will's) - it's been very good.
Next time I'm going for a YTX14H-BS ... which has an even higher CCA rating.
