Grease for my ring?

#1 Post by MartDude » Wed Nov 21, 2012 1:28 pm

Injector o-rings, that is. On the BMW K100.

Would silicone grease be ok? If not, what else?

I did a fairly extensive Google search on this before posting - looked at quite a number of threads on (mainly) car, bike & boat forums. There seems to be 2 principal schools of thought on this: use silicone grease, petroleum-based products can cause o-rings to swell; and, use clean engine oil/grease, silicone can damage o-rings. Not being an expert on lubricants and their effects on different materials, I'm still in the dark.

maybe a little off topic but,,,,,,,,,

when we used to use the old copper slip at work it was found to cause o-rings to harden and become brittle.

Dunno but kawasaki specify silicon grease for the sliding (occasionally) bits of my callipers. That's steel pins sliding in rubber gaiters. You can get big tubes from industrial supply places like RS components for about the same price as tiny amounts from car accessory places.

We use this when building pneumatic valves up mart on the o rings it is a lithium type grease. It should be more than adequate
Tolerance will be our undoing.

I use red rubber seal grease. The same stuff ye use when doing fork seals etc.

Is that sufficiently heat resistant for injector o-rings, Will?

Another vote for red rubber grease here. It's de rigeur when reassembling brake calipers. Brakes can get pretty damn hot, as well...

Martdude, you only need the lube for ease of assembley,
red rubber grease wont hurt any seal at all (modern grease is white )
Wait for interjection re Canadian weilding big club.
Next time you need to think about the injector seals, it will be time to replace em

Well my K100 is still going after feck knows how many thousands of miles since clearing them out. Had the bike 10 years, must've covered a good 40-50,000 miles since. Ah, back in the times when I only rode my bike all day.. *sigh*
