Bikes from my youth

#1 Post by blinkey501 » Tue Jun 05, 2012 11:08 am

I am fast aproaching 41 years of age and i can remember my 21st birthday party like it was yesterday.
Nothing wrong with the old grey matter there, althogh my short term memory is rubbish at times.
I also think i am having a mid life crisis and maybe trying to relive my youth...Why?
Looking back at the old bikes that i have had over the years, and at the time i used and abused them are now becoming collectable and are going up in value all the time.
That said if you can find some of these bike has some are becoming so rare.
My first bike i had was an Honda MBX 80 in rothmans racing colours.
Trying to find a complete bike is rare very rare, Has they were only made for two years
Last week i saw an advert for one that needed restoring and was keen on the idea and at 200 quid....Bargain
I rang the chap but was disapointed has it had sold.
He told me he had bought the bike 6 months previous but the second hand bits he required seemed imposible to source.
There was one on ebay two weeks ago and a headlight was required, and basically a box of bits so i put it in my saved list and then looked on ebay and other forums and web sites for the illusive headlight.
Big mistake has within the half an hour that i had taken you guessed it it had gone wiyh a buy it now of 175 quid :smt013 .
One other bike i had in my youth was a Yamaha RD 80.
Although these two bikes were from the same era they were worlds apart with the honda definatly being the better of the two bikes.
No surprise there with hondas allways being a well built bike.
Also on a final note when i had the MBX an mate of mine Dean had a white one who then sold to his cousin some twenty two years ago called martin.
I saw dean a couple of days ago and although martin had sold the bike a long time ago, Dean told me that after all these years martin has tracked his bike down and purchased it again
I am looking forward to seeing this bike has Dean will be going to look at it soon and hopefully i will be invited to go along.
Tolerance will be our undoing.

Ah yes.. My young son is coming on 14 and we're looking at bikes for him to start cutting his motorcycling teeth on.
Current line up that get searched often:
RD50
AR50

He doesnt want a twist n go ped and im avoiding him going the TZR50 kind of modern route. Plenty of AR80s rear their heads on ebay but seldom a decent 50

... I was a late bloomer with regard to bikes - didn't get my leg-over, so to speak, until I was 22 (am 38 now). None of my previous rides hold much nostalgia for me, though I did enjoy my Firestorm for its noisy reliability until it was stolen, and I guess I have a soft-spot for the ridiculous 400cc, shaft-driven Intruder that I rode about 50,000km on while living in Japan.
